Amazon Cancels “Utopia” After a Single Season

Dan Byrd, Desmin Borges, Ashleigh LaThrop, Sasha Lane, and Javon 'Wanna' Walton in "Utopia"

Remakes of hit British dramas often struggle to find success in the U.S., and Utopia is the latest title to be added to this list. Amazon canceled this sci-fi series after a single season on the air.

Based on the 2013 British drama of the same name, Utopia centered on a group of young adults who become targets of a mysterious deep state organization after meeting online and getting a hold of cult underground graphic novel Utopia. Its cast included John Cusack, Sasha Lane, and Rainn Wilson.

Utopia had a long journey to the small screen in the U.S., and it’s been in the works since 2014. David Fincher was originally set to direct the series for HBO, but Amazon picking it up after this plan fell through, with the Gone Girl scribe Gillian Flynn serving as creator, screenwriter, and producer.

Utopia has had a quiet run on Amazon, but some of their new series that premiered throughout 2020 managed to find more success. Upload, Hunters, and Alex Rider have all been renewed for the second season earlier this year.
