The upcoming Season 2 of 9-1-1: Lone Star will be without its original female lead, Liv Tyler.

According to sources, Tyler approached producers over the summer about exiting the show, even though she had a multi-year contract, due in part to concerns regarding traveling from her home in the U.K. to the U.S. to shoot during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Her character, Michelle Blake, the paramedic Emergency Medical Services captain, won’t be recast or killed off, which makes it possible for her to return.

Gina Torres will be added to the cast next season as Paramedic Captain Tommy Vega, to fill the void of Tyler’s character.

“What a thrill it was having a movie star of Liv Tyler’s stature to help us launch the first season of ‘911: Lone Star,’” series showrunner Tim Minear said. “We loved working with Liv and will be forever indebted to her for her haunting, powerful portrayal of Michelle Blake. While we were able to tell a complete chapter in Michelle’s story, as with Connie Britton on our mothership, we also feel like there are more stories to be told. The door here will always be open for a return.”

9-1-1: Lone Star also stars Rob Lowe, Ronen Rubinstein, Sierra Aylina McClain, Jim Parrack, Natacha Karam, Brian Michael Smith, Rafael Silva, Julian Works, Brianna Baker, and Mark Elias.

9-1-1 and its spinoff series Lone Star have been renewed for seasons four and two respectively. According to Variety, the shows have very well received averaging 16 million viewers per episode in multi-platform viewing.

“9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star are truly two of the strongest and most thrilling dramas on broadcast television, as well as being centerpieces for Fox Entertainment,” said Michael Thorn of Fox in a statement. “Creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, as well as their incredible teams of writers, directors, casts and entire crews, make jaw-dropping, edge-of-your-seat magic in every episode. From Los Angeles earthquakes and tsunamis to Texas-sized tornados and bucking broncos, both shows deliver incredible spectacle with strong, identifiable characters you care about week to week. We eagerly look forward to many more thrilling rescues in both series, which help honor this country’s brave first responders, as well as those around the world.”
