Ray Donovan actor Liev Schreiber will be leading the movie adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s 1950 novel Across the River and Into the Trees.

The project will begin shooting in Venice, Italy next month and Schreiber will play Colonel Richard Cantwell, a character based partially on Hemingway’s friend, Colonel Charles T. Lanham.

In the novel, Lanham is an American officer serving in Italy during the end of World War II, who’s on a duck hunting trip in Northern Italy. Cantwell’s dealing with a star-crossed romance with a younger woman, after being physically and mentally damaged during World War I, while trying to come to terms with his mortality.

The cast includes Matilda De Angelis (The Prize), Laura Morante (Cherry On The Cake), Javier Camara (Truman), and Oscar-nominated Italian actor Giancarlo Giannini (Seven Beauties).

Schreiber’s most well-known role is as the lead in Ray Donovan. He won a Tony for the 2005 production of Glengarry Glen Ross.
