]]>To make the whole thing even better, Cuarón received his shiny statue from none other than his good friend and longtime collaborator – the Shape of Water director Guillermo del Toro.
“It’s just one of those things that are completely unreal. It’s one of those miracles of life. Your brother, not only in life, but also in film, is the one giving you the award,” said this renowned director, and went on to thank his beautiful cast for bringing to life this film from his memory.
Before the Directors Guild Awards rolled around, Alfonso Cuarón won best director award at several major ceremonies, including Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards.

]]>Roma ended up beating the likes of several awards season front-runners, including The Favourite and A Star Is Born to win best picture award at the ceremony. It also scored a victory in additional three categories: best director, best cinematography and best non-English speaking film.
Roma is Cuarón’s first film taking place in his home country of since Y Tu Mamá También, which came out in 2001 and led to his first Oscar nod. It’s been described as “the most powerfully personal story of his career” and received dozens of awards nominations since its release.

]]>Roma is Cuarón’s most personal film to date since it’s inspired by his own upbringing in the middle-class neighborhood of Mexico City this project was named after. It chronicles the life of a live-in housekeeper and a small family she’s taking care of.
Cuarón said this award is incredibly important to him and thanked the producers who helped him bring this story to life. He also thanked his leading ladies Marina De Tavira, Yalitza Aparicio and Nancy Garcia for their courage, generosity and immense respect in portraying the women who raised him. David Linde, whose company Participant Media produced Roma, was also delighted after receiving the good news.
“Working with Alfonso on Roma has already been an amazing journey for everyone at Participant, and we are beyond thrilled that his brilliant film has been honored with the Golden Lion. This film is a gift to all audiences, transcending language and cultural barriers and inspiring compassion across the globe,” said Linde.
