]]>This film is still in the early stages of development, and not much is known about it so far. Alvarez is coming on board as a director with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free producing, but the project is apparently gaining speed after the 20th Century and Scott Free heard Alvarez’s impressive pitch.
Plot points are being kept under wraps, but the ferocious race of alien beings called Xenomorphs will take the center stage, terrorizing the humans that cross their paths. Merced is only the second actress to be cast in the project, following Mare of Easttown breakout star Cailee Spaeny.
Merced is no stranger to starring in big blockbusters. The former Nickelodeon actress previously appeared in Transformers: The Last Knight and later played the titular role in Dora and the Lost City of Gold.
She recently made a switch to romantic comedies, and we got to watch her in Father of the Bride and Romeo and Juliet reimagining Rosaline just last year. She’s attached to several promising projects, including the superhero film Madame Web and the John Green adaptation Turtles All the Way Down.

]]>Having turned the Coen Brothers’ Fargo into a limited series, Noah Hawley is planning to do the same to the extraterrestrial franchise. The FX series will in no way be connected to Sigourney Weaver’s story that was the focus of the first three films.
But not everyone is excited about the adaptation.
“It’ll never be as good as the first one,” expressed Ridley Scott who directed the 1979 original.
Although James Cameron and David Fincher directed the next two Alien films, respectively, Scott returned to the director’s chair for Prometheus which came out in 2012.
Although Weaver had expressed interest in reuniting with the Gladiator filmmaker, she did not star in the prequel. Five years later, a follow-up to Prometheus was released, entitled Alien: Covenant.
The Alien limited series is scheduled to begin filming next spring.

]]>Speaking with Forbes, the director addressed the last entries to the franchise which were badly received by audiences. He said that the new movie will probably not follow in their footsteps. “That’s in process. We went down a route to try and reinvent the wheel with Prometheus and Covenant. Whether or not we go directly back to that is doubtful because Prometheus woke it up very well,” he said. “But you know, you’re asking fundamental questions like, ‘Has the Alien himself, the facehugger, the chestburster, have they all run out of steam? Do you have to rethink the whole bloody thing and simply use the word to franchise?’ That’s always the fundamental question.”
Prometheus was Scott’s first attempt to stray from the franchise’s formula of alien vs. humans in different scenarios and forms. The movie was a prequel expanding on the creation of the xenomorphs. After the movie left audiences somewhat confused, though, the director changed direction with Alien: Covenant trying to go back to the classic formula while maintaining some of the prequel’s ideas. As Covenant bombed at the box office, it remains to be seen in which direction Scott will choose to lead the franchise in the future.
