Issa López and Barry Jenkins Working on “True Detective” Season 4

The fourth season of True Detective was a long time coming and it seems that HBO is finally trying to make it happen. Issa López and Barry Jenkins will be at the helm of the next chapter of the critically acclaimed anthology series, being developed under the title “True Detective: Night Country.

Jenkins, best known for his work on the Oscar-winning film Moonlight, was most recently involved with a historic mini-series The Underground Railroad. He’s coming on board as an executive producer, while Lopez will serve as writer and director of the pilot episode.

One person who is noticeable missing from the picture is Nic Pizzolatto, the original creator and writer of the first three seasons. He considered developing new episodes back in 2019 before deciding to focus on new projects, and HBO eventually determined it’s time to bring a new creative team on board.

The first season of True Detective premiered on HBO in 2014 and the show returned for two more, which centered on a new storyline. The first season starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams fronted the second, while Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff took the lead in the third.

Moonlight’s Barry Jenkins to Direct “The Lion King” Sequel

Disney gave us one of their biggest box office hits in recent years with the live-action remake of The Lion King, and it was just a matter of time before they announced its sequel. That moment is finally here, and not only that, but they also announced that Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins will be in charge of bringing this project to life.

Jenkins’ previous movies include the Oscar-winning drama Moonlight and the adaptation of James Baldwin’s novel If Beale Street Could Talk.

Jenkins said he’s excited about the prospect of developing a project in The Lion King universe because he grew up with these characters in the ‘90s. “Having the opportunity to work with Disney on expanding this magnificent tale of friendship, love, and legacy while furthering my work chronicling the lives and souls of folk within the African diaspora is a dream come true,” he said in a statement.

Deadline described The Lion King sequel as a The Godfather: Part II, only set on the African plain. It’s expected to further explore the mythology of the beloved characters from the first film directed by Jon Favreau, which grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide and went on to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time.

Full List of 2019 Independent Spirit Awards Winners

This year’s awards season is finally wrapping up, and Spirit Awards celebrated the best that independent film had to offer in 2018. If Beale Street Could Talk came out swinging and collected a total of three awards by the end of the night.

Barry Jenkins’ adaptation of James Baldwin’s classic novel came out victorious in several major categories, including best feature and best director. Regina King collected the award for her critically acclaimed supporting turn in this film, but this wasn’t much of a surprise since she’s always been a front runner in this category.

If Beale Street Could Talk is a harrowing tale of a young woman living in Harlem, who’s trying to prove her fiance has been wrongly accused of a violent crime before the birth of their child. In addition to King, it also stars KiKi Layne and Stephan James.
