The Award season is heating up, and the Golden Globes are one of the first major awards shows to announce its nominees. Belfast and The Power of the Dog are leading the way with seven nominations each, while Succession is the main contender in the TV field with five nods.

Belfast and The Power of the Dog will be competing for one of the biggest awards of the night—best motion picture drama—together with CODA, King Richard, and Dune. They’ll be going head to head in several more categories, including best director and best screenplay.

When it comes to the comedy and musical side, the list of contenders includes Cyrano, Don’t Look Up, Licorice Pizza, Tick Tick Boom, and West Side Story. Don’t Look Up and West Side Story are the main contenders in this field, with five nominations each.

The television side features many familiar faces, as many of the previous Emmy winners are in the running for top awards. Succession is leading the drama field with a total of five nominations, followed by Ted Lasso and The Morning Show with four each.

The Golden Globe nominations were announced by Snoop Dogg on Monday, while the ceremony is set to take place on January 9th, 2022.

Many of this year’s Oscar hopefuls premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, and Belfast created the most buzz. Kenneth Branagh’s latest directorial effort picked up the festival’s biggest accolade—the coveted People’s Choice Award.

The coming-of-age drama about a young boy growing up in Belfast during the 60s was met with critical acclaim at TIFF and managed to beat tough competition to win the People’s Choice Award. Scarborough and The Power of the Dog were also in the running for this award and they were crowned as first and second runner-up.

What makes TIFF’s People’s Choice Award so significant is the fact it often foreshadowed Academy Award winners for Best Picture. Last year’s winner Nomadland also picked up this award, and so did Green Book and 12 Years a Slave.

When it comes to the rest of the major winners at TIFF, acting awards went to Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog). Denis Villeneuve walked away with the director award for his work on the sci-fi epic Dune.
