Stiller will play a work-obsessed Mike, who must embark on a short trip to rural Ohio after his four rambunctious nephews lost their parents in a car accident. His three-day trip transforms into weeks of farm-life mayhem, making him realize he found a new home for himself, instead of looking for foster care for his nephews.

Stiller will also executive produce this project alongside Red Hour Film’s partner John Lesher, Rivulet’s Rob Paris and Mike Witherill, and Rough House’s Nate Meyer. Leland Douglas (Call of the Wild) wrote the script, with David Gordon Green (the Halloween franchise) coming on board to direct.

Nutcrackers will mark Stiller’s first major starring role since 2017, when he appeared in Mike White’s Brad’s Status and Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories. He’s mostly been focusing on his work behind the camera after that, most notably as director and executive producer of the Apple TV+’s Severance, which has been nominated for 14 Emmys during its first season.

Severance centers around a group of employees working at a sinister biotech corporation Lumon Industries, whose memories have been surgically divided between their work and personal lives. The series was created by Dan Erickson with Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle serving as directors.

Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, announced the show’s renewal in an official statement and said they’re excited to unpack more layers of Lumon in the second season.

“Thanks to creator Dan Erickson, the brilliant Ben Stiller, and an incomparable cast and crew, ‘Severance’ has imagined an existence that‘s equal parts riveting and enthralling as viewers around the globe can’t get enough of these rich characters,” said Cherniss.

The final episode of the first season of Severance will hit Apple TV+ on April 8. Adam Scott plays the lead role on this riveting show while the rest of the cast includes Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette.

News of his passing was confirmed by his son, actor Ben Stiller, on social media on Monday.

“I’m sad to say that my father, Jerry Stiller, passed away from natural causes,” he wrote on Twitter. “He was a great dad and grandfather,  and the most dedicated husband to Anne for about 62 years. He will be greatly missed. Love you Dad.”

The New York native launched his career in the 1950s. He was best known for his role as Frank Costanza in Seinfeld. During an Archive of American Television Interview in 2011, he admitted that at first, he didn’t find the writing very funny. But during rehearsal opposite Jason Alexander, who played his son George everything changed. 

“Jason comes over and says ‘Don’t be afraid to hit me,'” Stiller recalled. “So he says ‘Dad can I have the keys to the car.’ Bang I gave him a real smack and (the room) absolutely fell apart. At that point Estelle Harris said to Larry (David, the show’s creator) ‘Can I hit him too?’”

The workplace drama has been handed a series order by Apple TV+. Stiller will executive produce and direct the 10-episode show. 

Severance hails from creator Dan Erickson, who also penned the scripts and exec produced alongside Stiller and Desperate Housewives’ Chris Black.

The series is set at Lumen Industries — a company that is looking to take work-life balance to a new level. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Scott will star as Mark, an employee with a dark past trying to put himself back together. 

Apple TV+ launched November 1.
