The Cannes Film Festival has decided to opt-out of a physical edition and instead unveil a selection of movies in early June and collaborate with several festivals, including Venice, to present some films. They’ve also ruled out a physical festival this fall.

“As of today, a physical edition seems complicated to organize, so we are going forward with an announcement of films from the (initial Official) Selection at the beginning of June,” said a spokesperson for the festival, which confirms what Cannes’ director Thierry Fremaux said on Sunday during an interview with Screen Daily.

Instead of doing a virtual festival, Cannes will organize “redeployment ‘outside the walls’ (of Cannes), in collaboration with fall festivals,” said the spokesperson.

Fremaux plans to announce a list of movies that were part of the roster and scheduled to be released in theaters between now and next spring and the films will be given a “Cannes 20” label. For next year’s festival, the selection process will begin in the fall and the films that were selected for this edition and have delayed their release by a year will be considered for the 2021 edition.

The “labeled” films will be shown at film festivals such as Toronto, Deauville, Angoulême, San Sebastian, New York, Busan, and Fremaux’s own Lumière festival in Lyon.

The Cannes Marché du Film’s virtual edition is due to run June 22-26, alongside a U.S agencies-led virtual market. It’s still to be determined if the Venice Film Festival will take place and a final decision will be made at the end of the month.

The streaming giant is reportedly looking into buying cinemas, something that could give their original content a better chance of winning big awards.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Netflix considered buying LA’s Landmark theatres but backed out because the price exceeded their budget. Netflix refused to comment.

Buying cinemas will help Netflix secure more major awards, like the Oscars, for its original content. The reported decision to purchase cinemas seems to follow on from the current conflict between Netflix and Cannes. The ‘feud’ began when Cannes banned Netflix from competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or. As a result of the ban, Netflix pulled out of Cannes entirely.

“We want our films to be on fair ground with every other filmmaker,” Sarandos told Variety. “There’s a risk in us going in this way and having our films and filmmakers treated disrespectfully at the festival. They’ve set the tone. I don’t think it would be good for us to be there.”

Showing original content in theatres, would mean that Netflix’s original films will be allowed to compete in Cannes and other big film competitions.

An analyst from MKM Partners, Eric Handler, said: “It seems Netflix would like to get some of its movies for Oscar contention or other types of industry awards. They’re trying to get credibility. Netflix took off when a couple of their own titles got nominated for Emmys. That lent credibility to what they’re doing. If they can do that for various awards, that might raise the platform a little bit.”

Artistic director Thierry Fremaux has added an interesting new rule to the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. Selfies on the red carpet are no longer allowed.

He told Le Film Francis magazine on Friday: “On the red carpet, the trivial aspect and the slowing down provoked by the disorder which these selfies create tarnishes the quality of [the red carpet experience] and of the festival as a whole.”

It’s not clear how the ban will be enforced as mobile phones are permitted at the event and photos, in general, are allowed.. just no selfies.

On top of the selfie ban, the festival has also banned press screenings during the day prior to gala premiers. This means that journalists will have to view all films along with the guests at the 7 pm screenings in the Debussy theatre. This change was made as a way of boosting the prestige of gala premieres. Fremaux said that the idea was to “revamp the attractiveness of and gloss gala evenings.”

The festival will commence on Tuesday 8th May and the closing ceremony will take place on Saturday. The event will mark the 71st edition of the festival and the official selection will be announced on April 12th.
