The Star Wars actress left millions in mourning when she suddenly passed away in December 2016. The 60-year-old has been on a flight from London to Los Angeles when she stopped breathing. Following four days on a ventilator, the actress was declared dead.

But, thanks to technology, Fisher will once again be seen on screen.

Director of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, J.J. Abrams, previously told Vanity Fair that he had discovered old footage of Fisher, left over from The Force Awakens and would use them in the upcoming film.

Last month, Abrams had said, “You don’t recast that part, and you don’t have her disappear. Using CGI was out of the question. There was actually a way to use those scenes to continue her story. And the crazy thing is, every day it hits me that she’s not here, but it’s so surreal because we’re working with her in scenes. She is alive in these scenes, and in some with Billie [Lourd], her daughter. Princess Leia lives in this film in a way that is mind-blowing to me.”

The filmmaker originally cut out Lourd, thinking that scenes alongside her late mother would be too difficult for the 26-year-old to watch, but she surprised by asking Abrams to keep them as they are.

Star Wars: Episode XI is due for release on December 20th.

Almost 2 years later, the big bosses behind the Star Wars franchise, Disney, and LucasFilm, have revealed that Carrie will reprise her role as Leia Organa in the forthcoming Star Wars: Episode IX through the aid of previously unused footage.

Director J.J. Abrams confirmed the news, saying “We desperately loved Carrie Fisher. Finding a truly satisfying conclusion to the Skywalker saga without her eluded us. We were never going to recast or use a CG character. With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie [Lourd], we have found a way to honor Carrie’s legacy and role as Leia in Episode IX by using unseen footage we shot together in Episode VII.”

The decision has also received the blessing of the actress’s brother, Todd, who stated: “As we, her family, as well as her extended family of fans around the world so believe, Carrie’s Princess Leia is forever entrenched in the franchise and her indelible presence is fundamental to the film.”

Star Wars: Episode IX begins filming on the 1st of August.
