The two-time Oscar winner, who is currently getting great reviews for his portrayal of Mister Rogers in the critically acclaimed biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, is set to receive this honorary award at the 77th Annual Golden Globes on January 5th, 2020.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Lorenzo Soria announced the decision in an official statement and said they’re proud to bestow this award to Tom Hanks.

“For more than three decades, he’s captivated audiences with rich and playful characters that we’ve grown to love and admire. As compelling as he is on the silver screen, he’s equally so behind the camera as a writer, producer, and director,” said Soria.

The Forrest Gump actor will be following in the footsteps of Jeff Bridges, Oprah Winfrey, and Meryl Streep, who were honored with this award in the past three years. He could also score a nomination in one of the acting categories for his turn in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

They decided to go with the Big Lebowski star this time around because his brilliant body of work across diverse genres has captured the hearts and minds of audiences worldwide.

“We look forward to celebrating ‘the Dude’ and his remarkable career and philanthropic achievements at the upcoming Golden Globe Awards,” said Tatna.

Jeff Bridges won his first Golden Globe back in 2010, thanks to the lead role in critically acclaimed drama Crazy Heart. He received additional four nominations over the years – most recently for his supporting turn in Hell or High Water from 2016.

Bridges recently appeared in Drew Goddard’s sophomore film Bad Times at the El Royale, alongside Dakota Johnson and Jon Hamm. He’s currently getting ready to play a self-obsessed virtuoso violinist who’s battling life-threatening illness in Reed Morano’s next project.
