Just over a year since the Black Panther actor passed away, Netflix has established a scholarship in his memory.

The bursary, worth $5.4 million, will cover the full cost of a four-year degree at Howard University’s College of Fine Arts where the Oscar nominee himself graduated in 2000.

“It is with immense pleasure and deep gratitude that we announce the creation of an endowed scholarship in honor of alumnus, Chadwick Boseman, whose life and contributions to the arts continue to inspire,” said Howard University President, Wayne A.I. Frederick, M.D. “This scholarship embodies Chadwick’s love for Howard, his passion for storytelling, and his willingness to support future generations of Howard students.”

In tribute to Boseman, the university renamed its College of Fine Arts after him last month.

The Chadwick A. Boseman Memorial Scholarship will focus on students who exemplify exceptional skills in the arts, with the initial grants being awarded to one recipient in each class starting this academic year.

Howard University also shared a video on YouTube that shows lettering being installed on the entry of Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts.

“An icon in his own right who has left an immeasurable legacy for the next generation. Thank you Mr. Boseman,” wrote the university in the caption of the clip.

Boseman graduated from Howard University in 2000, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in directing. During his time as a student, Boseman notably protested the university’s decision to scrap the College of Fine Arts and integrate it into the College of Arts & Sciences. This decision was eventually reversed in 2018.

Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2020 at the age of 43. His most notable works include the role of T’Challa/Black Panther in Marvel Cinematic Universe, action thriller 21 Bridges, war drama Da 5 Bloods, and biographical musical Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. For his work on the latter movie, Boseman won Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice Movie, and Screen Actors Guild awards for Best Actor while picking up an Academy Awards nomination in the same category.
