]]>Variety reports that around 65% of the theaters in China—7,099 of them—were open this weekend. Their overall income was a mere $17.6 million, only $5 million more than the week before. This poor performance is mainly due to restrictions the government issued on the operations, limiting the number of screenings scheduled and the number of tickets sold to only 30% of their maximum capacity. These restrictions are meant to maintain social distancing and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Sonic the Hedgehog remains the highest-grossing movie based on a video game to this date. It grossed $146 million in the U.S. and over $306 million around the world. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is in the works and is scheduled to be released in April 2022.

]]>There is still no official release date for the distribution of the movie, but several movie apps list it as April 30th. If so, Warner Bros. apparently wished to draw crowds during the May 1st Labor Day holiday, which is usually one of the busiest weekends of the year.
The announcement came in the form of an illustrated poster showing Harry’s owl, Hedwig with Harry’s green inked acceptance letter. The tagline reads: “Magic is coming”.
Chinese fans reacted enthusiastically to the news. “Is this for real?? Put out all eight of them at once; I’ll just live in the cinemas!”, one of the fans wrote on Weibo (the Chinese equivalent of Twitter). Another fan wrote: “With the 4K restoration and the 3D, this will be like a whole new film. Even if you’ve seen Harry Potter already in theaters, this will be an unprecedented new experience.”

]]>The first day of screenings included Chinese titles such as Liberation, My People, My Country, Sheep Without a Shepherd, and the animated film Spycies. It also offered four children movies including three in the Alibaba franchise. The theater, which is located in the capital of the Xinjiang region in western China, tried to lure people in with free screenings for parents with children, but not a single person arrived.
“We can’t stay closed forever,” the theater operator said in a statement. “We can only cooperate with the notices, and test the situation a bit, and see what feedback we get from the public. If there are no new films, it makes no difference if we’re open or not. At the moment, we only have these few films; we have to wait and see if there will be new movies released.”
For safety reasons, the theater will be operated by only three staff members who will disinfect the theaters before and after the screenings. Tickets will only be sold in the theater and not online.
