Steven Moffatt was the man who brought us the terrifying weeping angels and the chilling double-episode in the Library where we first met River Song (Alex Kingston).

Moffatt’s guest episodes were such a hit with audiences that he was offered the position of primary writer and showrunner after Russel T Davis left the show in 2011. While some fans stood by the Doctor in his Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi eras, others were not as impressed with the series as it went on.

From crayon coloured daleks and a gawdy Tardis makeover, there is one thing which Moffatt regrets above all else. He did not write a better character for Olivia Colman.

Steven said: “In my first series there was Olivia Colman… just a heartbeat before she was stratospheric. I think, ‘Oh we wasted that, didn’t we!’ Bloody hell.”

The Oscar nominee played a mother in the episode “The Eleventh Hour”. She didn’t do much other than utter empty threats and was actually miscredited in the end credits as “Olivia Coleman”.

Now, the actress is heavily tipped to win an Oscar for her role in The Favourite. Her phenomenal performance is literally worlds apart from her sharp-toothed generic monster from Doctor Who. No wonder Moffatt is having regrets!
