The Black Widow actress stars as Alice Chambers, a young married woman in the 1950s. She and her husband Jack (played by Harry Styles) live in the idyllic town of Victory which is run by the company Jack works for. Life is seemingly perfect until Alice begins to question her suspicious Stepford Wife surroundings. 

Olivia Wilde, who features as one of the Chambers’ neighbors, also directed the flick, which marks her follow-up to 2019’s Booksmart. She said during CinemaCon 2022 that the movie was inspired by Inception, The Matrix, and The Truman Show. 

The film’s first official trailer has now been released and suffice it to say that it feels like a fever dream. It’s easy to see why Alice feels the walls are literally closing in on her. 

Chris Pine plays the CEO of Jack’s company and is fittingly creepy as he tells the young lady, “I’ve been waiting for someone like you, someone to challenge me…”

The rest of the cast is rounded out by Gemma Chan, KiKi Layne, Nick Kroll, Sydney Chandler, Kate Berlant, Asif Ali, Douglas Smith, Timothy Simons, and Ari’el Stachel.

Don’t Worry Darling is out on September 13, 2022.

Wilde posted a photo of Styles on Instagram, accompanied by a caption in which she discussed how “most male actors don’t want to play supporting roles in female-led films.” She added that the ex-One Direction member approached the opportunity with a different mindset and embraced the opportunity.

“He didn’t have to join our circus, but he jumped on board with humility and grace and blew us away every day with his talent, warmth, and ability to drive backward,” Wilde wrote.

Don’t Worry Darling is set in the 1950s and focuses on “unhappy housewife” Alice (Florence Pugh), who finds out her husband Jack’s (Harry Styles) dark secret. Styles joined the project in September, stepping in for Shia LaBeouf.

The rest of the film’s cast includes Chris Pine, Wilde, Gemma Chan, and KiKi Layne. The shooting wrapped up in early February and the film is expected to be released in late 2021.

Don’t Worry Darling will be Harry Styles’ second movie appearance after he played a supporting role in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk. His next project is the adaptation of Bethan Roberts’ novel My Policeman, in which he plays the lead.
