To celebrate the BBC One series Sherlock’s 10th anniversary, Moffatt and Gattis got together to answer fan questions. One fan took the opportunity to ask who they would like to see playing Sherlock of he was a woman.

The question saw the creators listing off an exciting list of names. To kick it off, Moffatt suggested Michelle Gomez and Gatiss suggested Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Moffatt mentioned Olivia Coleman next and Killing Eve‘s Jodie Comer was mentioned by the TV producer, Sue Vertue.

Moffat then went on to explain why casting a woman to play Sherlock would not require many alterations to the character.

“I think we could sit here [and] generate quite a lot of names of female Sherlock Holmes,” he said. “I think that part would go female very easily. I don’t think you have to do anything. Change the pronouns and you don’t even have to change the name. Sherlock Holmes could be a woman quite easily. “

“You know what I get stuck on?” he adds. “Who is John Watson as a woman? I find that slightly harder to think of that kind of performance.”
