Well, it’s official, Taylor Swift’s eighth album Folklore is the No. 1 album of 2020. Swift finished the year with 2.3 million album units.

Folklore just surpassed Lil Baby’s sophomore album My Turn which came in second with 2.1 million in the album-equivalent-unit derby.

The results come from Rolling Stone, which broke down the year’s music consumption data into different year-end charts. Following Swift and Lil Baby’s albums in the top 10 were Pop Smoke, the Weeknd, Juice WRLD, Post Malone, Roddy Ricch, Luke Combs, Harry Styles and, the Hamilton cast album.

Combs and Juice WRLD had to albums in the top 20. Lil Uzi Vert, Billie Eilish, Bad Bunny, DaBaby, Eminem, Halsey, Jhené Aiko, Drake, Morgan Wallen, Justin Bieber, Lewis Capaldi, Post Malone, and Polo G round out the top 25.

Swift’s Evermore was at Number 63 despite it being released in mid-December and 1989 and Reputation took the Number 116 and 165 spots. The only other artist with more albums on the year-end chart is Drake, with six, led by Dark Lane Demo Tapes at No. 20.

Taylor Swift made the best out of 2020, releasing two documentaries and two albums.

Swift joined Zane Lowe on Apple Music Tuesday to discuss her latest album, Evermore, her previous album Folklore, as well as winning the Apple Music award for songwriter of the year.

The singer spoke about how she released Folklore not long after writing it and just a week after its release, she decided to keep going. And five months later, Evermore debuted. “I feel differently today than I felt the day after releasing ‘Folklore’ because, even the day after releasing ‘Folklore,’ Aaron and I were still bouncing ideas back and forth and we just knew we were gonna keep writing music,” she said. “With this one, I have this feeling of sort of quiet conclusion and sort of this weird serenity of we did what we set out to do and we’re all really proud of it, and that feels really really nice.”

While almost every song on Swift’s first seven albums relates to an experience from her life, Folklore shares stories about people or places she made up. The album allowed her to explore storytelling, “My world felt opened up creatively,” she said.

Like Folklore, Evermore is the product of remote collaboration. For Folklore, Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner joined her for the first time for a recorded performance of the album, and for Evermore, the album was constructed through virtual communication. Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon was featured on both albums and has songwriting credits, but he hasn’t met with Swift in person yet.

Aaron Dessner decided to keep his Taylor Swift collaboration a secret from his 8-year-old daughter, who happens to be a big Swift fan.

Aaron Dessner is the guitarist of The National. He co-wrote and produce 11/16 of the songs on Swift’s surprise album.

Folklore dropped on Friday (June 24) and was kept a secret up until the day of the release. This means that Dessner was bound by a confidentiality agreement and had to keep the production of the record a secret from his daughter just in case she spilled the beans.

“I was so glad that we kept it [a secret] because I didn’t want to be the one that spilled the beans,” Dessner told Apple Music. “I have an eight-year-old daughter, and one day she asked me. She’s just like, ‘Daddy, do you know Taylor Swift?’ It was the morning after we’d written one of these songs.

“And every time we would write a song, it was like a weird lightning bolt, getting this struck by lightning or something, just exhilarated with electricity. I just looked her straight in the eye and said, ‘No’. I honoured my confidentiality.”
