Almost 31 years since Freddie Mercury left this mortal planet, new music of his has been discovered. The revelation was made by Queen bandmates, Roger Taylor and Brian May, who appeared on BBC Radio 2 this past weekend.

“We did find a little gem from Freddie that we’d kind of forgotten about and it’s wonderful,” Taylor revealed. “Actually, it was a real discovery.”

According to May, the track was sort of there all along… “It was kind of hiding in plain sight. We looked at it many times and thought, ‘Oh no, we can’t really rescue that’. But in fact, we went in there again and our wonderful engineering team went, ‘OK, we can do this and this’. It’s like stitching bits together.”

The song is said to have been recorded while the band was making their thirteenth studio album, The Miracle, in 1989. By that stage, Mercury was battling HIV, with his appearance described as gaunt.

“it’s beautiful. It’s touching,” May said of the un-released track entitled “Face It Alone”.

“It’s a very passionate piece,” Taylor agreed.

Fans of the late frontman will be able to hear the song in September.

Despite it being 27 years after his death, the name of the Queen frontman was on everyone’s lips thanks to the biographical film Bohemian Rhapsody.

The Oscar-winning movie reignited a surge in Queen’s music and now it appears we will soon be able to add another song to the collection.

“Time Waits For No One” is a previously unreleased version of “Time”, which was recorded in 1986 for Mercury’s concept album and musical of the same name.

“‘Time Waits For No One’ is a tribute to the musical force of Freddie Mercury; the performance, the drama, the vocal range, and after four decades waiting in the wings, is finally out for new and old fans alike,” reads the official statement. “A stunning eulogy to the Queen frontman, produced and directed by one of his closest friends.”

The song was originally shared last month but the physical copy will drop on July 26th.

In addition, Mercury’s long-time friend, Dave Clark, who produced the track, also unearthed negatives from the original recording session which have now been compiled into a music video.

And the producers of the film have now confirmed that they couldn’t either.

The 37-year-old deservedly won a Golden Globe award for the portrayal of Queen’s flamboyant frontman, but there was rumour that the role may have been played by Sacha Baron Cohen.

The Sweeney Todd actor and star of This Is America was never signed to the project, despite differing claims, according to Bohemian Rhapsody producer, Graham King.

“There was a lot of talk about different people playing Freddie Mercury and no one was actually signed to play Freddie Mercury, no one was attached to play Freddie Mercury until Rami Malek,” King stated. “It was just a lot of talk — there was a couple of actors that wanted to play that role.”

And speaking of people in their roles, King has now revealed the exact reason that director Bryan Singer pulled out of the project just two weeks before its conclusion.

“It’s an unfortunate situation, with like 16, 17 days to go and Bryan Singer just had some issues, his mother was very sick, and he’s the kind of guy that he needs to have 100% focus,” King explained at the Producers Guild Awards Nominees Breakfast. “He just said, I want to hiatus the film, and deal with what he had going on in his life. And the studio wanted to finish the film. And of course, my job is to protect the film at any cost and that’s what I was there to do.”

And because of that, the finished film may just win an Oscar or two.

Rami’s performance has already earned him heaps of praise from critics who believe that he brought the lead singer to life in the most charismatic manner.

“[It was] kind of the gun-to-the-head moment,” he told The Guardian about accepting the part. “What do you do? And I like to think if it’s a fight or flight situation, I’m going to fight. The scariest endeavors that I’ve chosen to take in my life have been the most fulfilling and rewarding. And this has proven to defend that equation.”

Freddie joined Queen in 1970 and remained the lead vocalist until his death from AIDS-related pneumonia in 1991.

“It’s an arduous thing to tell someone’s life in just two hours,” said Rami. “What’s the nature of celebrating a life? Definitely not avoiding his death in any way, or what caused his death, which is the AIDS virus. But I think if you don’t celebrate his life, and his struggles, and how complicated he was, and how transformative he was — and wallow instead in the sadness of what he endured and his ultimate death — then that could be a disservice to the profound, vibrant, radiant nature of such an indelible human being.”

Bohemian Rhapsody opens on the 24th of October.
