Fans of HBO’s epic fantasy series Game of Thrones are in for a treat as the network decided to tap into the world of Westeros once again. Actually, several more times.

HBO is reportedly developing three additional Game of Thrones spinoffs on top of the already confirmed prequel House of the Dragon. The new shows are also expected to explore the stories that took place before the events of the original series.

The first in line is 9 Voyages (Sea Snake) will follow famed Westeros sea adventurer Lord Corlys Velaryon. He had the largest fleet of ships in all of the Seven Kingdoms and was the head of a house even wealthier than Lannister.

9 Voyages made the biggest progress among the three series, having already tapped Bruno Heller (Rome, The Mentalist) as writer and creator. The remaining two, Flea Bottom and 10,000 Ships, are believed to be still in the “idea” phase.

Flea Bottom would likely focus on the poorest district in King’s Landing of the same name. 10,000 Ships, on the other hand, could tell the story of Princess Nymeria and her journey from Rhoyne to Dorne.

Even if all three shows get the green light, it will be a while before they actually get going. HBO is currently focused on House of the Dragon, which already has a pilot in-store and should start filming in the coming months.

The series will tell the story of the Targaryen civil war and is set around 200 years before the events of in the original series. The cast includes Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, and Matt Smith.

Before there was Game of Thrones, there was… Well, we’re not too sure. And neither, apparently, is George R.R. Martin.

With the epic show based on Martin’s series A Song of Ice and Fire ending after its eighth season, HBO announced that a prequel would be produced.

It was confirmed in October that an idea from Kingsman: The Secret Service producer, Jane Goldman, would be going to pilot, starring Naomi Watts of The Book of Henry.

At the time, the author was so excited that he wrote on his blog: “Casting is now underway for THE LONG NIGHT, the first of the GAME OF THRONES successor series to ordered to film. HBO has just announced the first cast member: NAOMI WATTS is coming on board as one of our stars. I could not be more excited. Welcome to Westeros, Naomi.”

But after his slip of finger, Martin is saying “not so fast.”

In another post, the author has now said, “Oh, I should also mention … HBO has informed me that the Jane Goldman pilot is not (yet) titled THE LONG NIGHT. That’s is certainly the title I prefer, but for the moment the pilot is still officially UNTITLED. So… mea culpa, mea culpa, mea culpa. Elsewise, the pilot is coming along well, with casting falling into place. I could tell you more, but I am not supposed to. We also have a couple of other successor shows still in development, but I cannot tell you about those either. Sorry.”

Oops.

Although Game of Thrones will wrap up after the eighth season is aired in 2019, HBO will not give up on the world of Westeros. The network announced on Friday that they have placed an order for a Game of Thrones prequel pilot, which will be thousands of years before the events in the original series.

The pilot will be created by Kingsman: The Secret Service writer Jane Goldman and George R. R. Martin, who wrote A Song of Ice and Fire novel series on which Game of Thrones is based on. If the pilot ends up getting a series order, Goldman will serve as a series’ showrunner.

HBO revealed a short synopsis for this Game of Thrones prequel:

Taking place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series chronicles the world’s descent from the Golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. And only one thing is for sure: From the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East, to the Starks of legend … it’s not the story we think we know.

Back in 2017, HBO hired several writers to develop scripts for multiple Game of Thrones prequel series including Jane Goldman, Carly Wray (Westworld), Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), and Brian Helgeland (Legend).  This is the one that managed to get a pilot order, and also might be the last one.

HBO’s Casey Bloys spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the prequels back in July 2017 and revealed that the network isn’t planning on making more than one Game of Thrones prequel series.

“My sense right now is we would be very lucky if one of the four rises to the level that we have set.” – said Bloys. “Now, theoretically, what if they’re all great? That’s a high-class problem that I’ll solve when it comes to that. But knowing what we know about the development process, that’s why we wanted to increase our odds. But I do not see a scenario where we have more than one. But again, high-class problem.”
