Martin wrapped up 2023 by sharing a post on his blog, where she dropped several hints about his future Game of Thrones projects on HBO. He revealed that the spin-off Nine Voyages, which centers on Corlys Velaryon’s journey aboard the Sea Snake ship, has been moved from live-action to animation.

“Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live-action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on,” wrote Martin.

He concluded the note by revealing there are three animated projects on the way but added none of them have been greenlit yet. Martin didn’t specify which projects he’s referring to, but he teased spin-offs Flea Bottom and 10,000 Ships back in 2021.

Following its conclusion in 2019, Game of Thrones produced a spin-off House of the Dragon, set to return for its second season later this year.

HBO is reportedly developing three additional Game of Thrones spinoffs on top of the already confirmed prequel House of the Dragon. The new shows are also expected to explore the stories that took place before the events of the original series.

The first in line is 9 Voyages (Sea Snake) will follow famed Westeros sea adventurer Lord Corlys Velaryon. He had the largest fleet of ships in all of the Seven Kingdoms and was the head of a house even wealthier than Lannister. 

9 Voyages made the biggest progress among the three series, having already tapped Bruno Heller (Rome, The Mentalist) as writer and creator. The remaining two, Flea Bottom and 10,000 Ships, are believed to be still in the “idea” phase.

Flea Bottom would likely focus on the poorest district in King’s Landing of the same name. 10,000 Ships, on the other hand, could tell the story of Princess Nymeria and her journey from Rhoyne to Dorne.

Even if all three shows get the green light, it will be a while before they actually get going. HBO is currently focused on House of the Dragon, which already has a pilot in-store and should start filming in the coming months.

The series will tell the story of the Targaryen civil war and is set around 200 years before the events of in the original series. The cast includes Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, and Matt Smith.
