Killers of the Flower Moon is going to be one of the front-runners in this year’s Oscar race, and it’s already set to receive several honorary awards. Martin Scorsese’s historical epic will be honored with historical icon and creature tribute at this year’s Gotham Awards.

Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of The Gotham Film and Media Institute, announced Flower Moon as the recipient of this honorary award. He described it as “a powerful examination of the history of violence bestowed upon the Osage Nation” and singled out Lily Gladstone as its standout performer.

“At the center of the brilliant writing, impeccable set design, and extraordinary cast, Lily Gladstone delivers a tour de force as Mollie Kyle. We’re thrilled to honor Lily with the film’s cast members during the ceremony,” said Sharp in a statement.

Gladstone is expected to pick up the award alongside her co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro. She’s also been nominated for the outstanding lead performance for her role in the indie drama The Unknown Country.

The 2023 Gotham Independent Film Awards will take place at the Cipriani Wall Street, New York on November 27. The list of major contenders includes All of Us Strangers with four nods, followed by Past Lives, A Thousand and One, and The Zone of Interest with three each.

Gotham Awards are usually the first major awards ceremony to kick off the Oscar season, and its list of nominees is finally in. The Lost Daughter and Passing, the feature directorial debuts of actresses Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Hall, are leading the way with five nods each.

Both movies are in the running for the biggest award of the ceremony—best feature. They’ll be competing against The Green Knight, Pig, and Test Pattern. The last movie is one of the major competitors with a total of three nominations, together with CODA and Red Rocket.

The Lost Daughter and Passing both owe most of their nominations to the amazing actresses that star in them. Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley received nominations for their performances in The Lost Daughter, and they’ll be competing against Passing’s Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga in their respective categories. Gyllenhaal and Hall are also in the running in two categories together—breakthrough director and best screenplay.

Actress Kristen Stewart, director Jane Campion, and the cast of The Harder They Fall are set to receive tribute awards.

The Gotham Independent Film Awards return on November 29th.

The awards season is slowly heating up, and the first major front-runners in the race for the Oscars are already emerging. Nomadland is leading the way after another big win at the Gotham Independent Film Awards.

The list of winners at this ceremony was pretty colorful, and it didn’t give us any significant repeat winners—in addition to being named as the best feature of the year, Nomadland also won the audience award, but its domination stopped there.

Frances McDormand surprisingly lost in the best actress race to Miss Juneteenth’s Nicole Beharie, while Riz Ahmed picked up the best actor award for Sound of Metal. Kingsley Ben-Adir, who played Malcolm X in One Night in Miami was named the best breakthrough actor.

Watchmen and I May Destroy You came out victorious in the TV categories and were rewarded as the best long-form and short-form series. Gotham Tributes were dedicated to Chadwick Boseman, Viola Davis, Steve McQueen, and Ryan Murphy.
