This will be The Public Theater’s 57th year of brining theatre fans Shakespeare in the Park and this year’s lineup will include a longtime anticipated stage adaptation of Hercules.

According to Deadline, a stage adaptation of Disney’s 1997 animated musical Hercules will close this summer’s Public Theatre season. The film reimagined the myth as a coming of age story, following Hercules and his quest to prove himself as a god.

The stage adaptation will feature the film’s music as well as new music composed by Alan Menken and David Zippel. Writing the book is Kristoffer Diaz and serving as choreographer is Chase Brock. 

Herculer is set to present at the at the company’s outdoor Delacorte Theater in New York’s Central Park between August 31-September 8 following productions of Much Ado About Nothing and Coriolanus.

“Our Public Works community promises to connect this brilliantly conceived story back to the earth from which it sprang: the people,” said Oskar Eustis, Public Theater Artistic Director, in a statement. “What a grand and unlikely experience this will be.”

Public Works Founder Lear deBessonet said, “Many generations of our Public Works families have embraced Disney musicals as a shared American canon. Hercules’ roots in Greek mythology, infused with soulful gospel music, make it a natural extension of Public Works’ radical exploration of humanity through Shakespeare and the classics. We’re excited to see how this Public Works production will uncover the deeper meaning of what it means to be a hero and how true strength is derived, not from the greatness of one person, but the transformative power of community.”
