August 25 will see the premiere of an unauthorized limited series about the heavyweight boxer, with Moonlight actor Trevante Rhodes starring in the lead role. Titled Mike, the show’s synopsis says it will explore “explores the tumultuous ups and downs of Tyson’s boxing career and personal life — from being a beloved global athlete to a pariah and back again.”

“We just wanted to tell an unbiased story and have the audience decide what they think or feel,” said showrunner Karen Gist. “Challenging what people think they know about Mike and hoping that they come away from the series with something else to think about. Whether you like him or hate him, does the story make you question how complicit society has been?”

Tyson, meanwhile, has hit out at Hulu, claiming that the streaming network did not offer any financial compensation to adapt his story.

“Don’t let Hulu fool you,” read his Instagram post. “I don’t support their story about my life. It’s not 1822. It’s 2022. They stole my life story and didn’t pay me. To Hulu executives I’m just a n***** they can sell on the auction block.”

The athlete further expressed his anger by referring to Hulu as “the streaming version of the slave master.”

In addition to Rhodes, Mike is set to star Harvey Keitel, Cus D’Amato, Laura Harrier, Russell Hornsby, and Li Eubanks.

Woke centers on an African-American cartoonist Keef Knight (Morris) who was on the verge of mainstream success when an unexpected incident changed his life. After years of keeping things light and avoiding controversial topics in his comics, he decides to change his tune after being racially profiled by overly aggressive policemen.

Woke draws inspiration from the life of cartoonist Keith Knight, who co-created the show alongside Marshall Todd. Jay Dye served as the showrunner of the first season, and Anthony King took over from him when the show returned for its second season this April.

Morris told Entertainment Weekly that Woke tries to answer the question, “How do you speak for the voiceless?” and showcased how “we are a product of our environment, and if you grow up a certain way, you grow up a certain way, but then every once in a while you gotta just stop, and shift, and make it a point to see things differently.”

In addition to Morris, Woke also starred Blake Anderson, T. Murph, Sasheer Zamata, and JB Smoove.

The new season of the beloved animated show, which is returning to the screen 22 years after its initial run, will include 13 new episodes. The show is a collaboration between Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation.

“After returning to their beloved home, the Warner Bros. Water Tower, the Animaniacs waste no time in causing chaos and comic confusion as they run loose through the studio and beyond, turning the world into their personal playground,” a press release for the new series reads.

But the siblings are not alone in their chaotic quest. Also returning is the world’s most devious mice duo Pinky and the Brain (well, half devious). The duo will resume its world domination efforts.

The original cast of the show is returning in the reboot—Rob Paulsen (Yakko, Pinky, and Dr. Scratchansniff), Jess Harnell (as Wakko), Tress MacNeille, and Maurice LaMarche (The Brain and Squit). Steven Spielberg is returning as executive producer. A second season was also announced for November 2021.

The series, created by Tony McNamara, is a satirical dramedy about the rise of Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) from being an outsider to becoming the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history.

Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, Adam Godley, Gwilym Lee, Charity Wakefield, Douglas Hodge, Sacha Dhawan, Sebastian de Souza, Bayo Gbadamosi, and Belinda Bromilow also starred in the series.

Hulu reported that The Great was “one of the top-performing original comedies” at the platform.

McNamara was nominated for an Oscar for best original screenplay for The Favourite, another historical dramady which starred Olivia Coleman as England’s Queen Anne.

McNamara told Deadline the idea for The Great came to him by chance, “I didn’t know much about her except that maybe she banged a horse,” he said of the famous rumor circulated about Catherine. “And then I heard something about her keeping the Age of Enlightenment alive. So, I read up on her and she seemed to be an amazing character—really complicated and really modern in a lot of ways. That made me want to write about her, and I thought, well, how do I write about her in a way that would make me want to watch it?”

Multiple outlets report that Hulu has acquired the dark drama In My Skin. 

Created by Kayleigh Llewellyn, the series follows Welsh teenager (played by Gabrielle Creevy) who lives a double life as she tries to keep her mother’s mental illness and her father’s alcoholism a secret.

“We were blown away by the response to the pilot episode, which won two BAFTA Cymru Awards, and now to have such a brilliant reception for the series is just incredible,” Llewellyn said. “I’m eternally grateful to the people both on and off the camera who have poured so much love and care into this show. It’s a story close to my heart and to be able to share it on a global platform is truly thrilling. I just hope that Americans will know what a ‘fat bap’ is….”

The series is directed by Lucy Forbes (End Of the F***king World 2) and executive produced by Nerys Evans and Llewellyn.

In My Skin premieres on Hulu June 4.

Hulu has renewed Shrill for another eight-episode season, same count as the second season. The first season of the series was six episodes. News of the renewal comes two months after the launch of season 2.

Based on the book Shrill: Notes from a Loud Woman by Lindy West, Shrill follows Annie, played by Aidy Bryant, a fat young woman who wants to change her life — but not her body.

The show was co-created by West and Bryant along with Ali Rushfield and has been well received with the first two seasons averaging an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The streamer unveiled the first trailer for the legal drama headlined by Captain America and The Avengers star Chris Evans Wednesday. 

Defending Jacob tells the story of a Massachusetts assistant district attorney Andy Barber (Evans) and what his family undergoes after his son, Jacob, played by Jaeden Martell is accused of murdering a classmate. The series also stars Michelle Dockery as Evans’ wife, Laurie.

The series hails from creator and writer Mark Bomback. Serving as director, executive producer, and showrunner is Morten Tyldum. In addition to starring, Evans also exec produces with Rosalie Swedlin and Adam Shulman for Anonymous Content.

Defending Jacob premieres April 24 on Apple TV+.

Hulu unveiled the first look at its new alien animated comedy Wednesday. Solar Opposites hails from Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland and the Adult Swim writer Mike McMahan.

The alien animated comedy follows a team of four aliens who have escaped their exploding home world, only to crash land into a move-in ready home in suburban America. They are evenly split on whether Earth is awful or awesome — Korvo (Roiland) and Yumyulack (Sean Giambrone) only all that’s bad, while Terry (Thomas Middleditch) and Jesse (Mary Mack) love humans.

Netflix reached a multi-year non-exclusive global deal with Sony Pictures TV that also allows Hulu to air the entire 110 episodes of the show.

Both deals are non-exclusive and Sony is currently speaking with other potential partners. Currently, Community is available on Amazon Prime Video in some international territories and it’s streaming on Netflix in Latin America and Ireland.

Hulu has been exclusively streaming Community repeats in the U.S. since 2016 after it acquired the rights to the final season of the show.

Community ran for five seasons at NBC from 2009 to 2014 before it was canceled and picked up by Yahoo! for a sixth season in 2015.

The show starred Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Ken Jeong, Jim Rash, Donald Glover, and Chevy Chase and it’s about strangers who connect through a community-college study group.

Parks and Recreation, another former NBC show, is also streaming on both platforms.
