Hollywood Bids Farewell to “The Lord of Rings” Star Ian Holm

Sir Ian Holm, best known for the role of Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings franchise, passed away at the age of 88. Many of his former collaborators celebrated his legacy, including the Oscar-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson.

Jackson wrote a heartfelt tribute in Holm’s honor and described him as “a delightful, generous man… with a lovely twinkle in his eye.” The Lord of the Rings director added it was “a privilege to work with him, and a blessing to know him.”

Several of Holm’s former co-stars also paid him a tribute on social media. Elijah Wood called him “the singular, brilliant and vibrant” person, while Dominic Monaghan described him as “a magical man”, both off and on set.

In addition to playing Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings films, Holm also starred as Ash in Alien, Vito Cornelius in The Fifth Element, Chef Skinner in Ratatouille. He was nominated for an Oscar and won a BAFTA award for his supporting performance in Chariots of Fire.
