Sir Ian McKellen is going on tour.

The Lord of the Rings star and LGBT icon Ian McKellen will be celebrating his 80th birthday with a huge tour across the UK. He will be hitting 80 venues and will be going totally solo. McKellen will be spending his special birthday (May 25) performing at Bolton’s Albert Halls Theatre. He will be performing at what seems like pretty much every theatre in the country.

“The show starts with Gandalf and will probably end with an invitation to act with me on stage. In between there will be anecdotes and acting,” the actor said in a statement.

“Live theatre has always been thrilling to me, as an actor and in the audience,” he continued. “Growing up in Lancashire, I was grateful to those companies who toured beyond London and I’ve always enjoyed repaying that debt by touring up and down the country myself, with the National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Prospect Theatre, the Actors’ Company, as well as with commercial productions. Sean Mathias, the director and I have worked together for stage and screen, many happy times.”

The ‘‘McKellen on Stage 2019’ will commence at the end of January in London.

The star-studded movie adaptation of the smash hit Cats is coming to theaters near you next year, and its cast just got a little bit more amazing. Idris Elba is set to join the upcoming musical as the villainous cat Macavity.

Tom Hooper will serve as the director of this exciting project, originally created by Andrew Lloyd Webber. He already has a great track record adapting Broadway musicals to the big screen – his version of Les Misérables received dozens of coveted awards, including three Oscars.

The list of big-name talents who already joined his Cats adaptation includes Jennifer as Grizabella, Ian McKellen as Gus and Taylor Swift and James Corden in unspecified roles. Idris Elba is set to play Macavity, the Napoleon of Crime in the world of Cats. He’s the main antagonist of the tribe of fellow cats called the Jellicles, central characters of the film.

Before Cats hits theaters on December 20, 2019, Idris Elba will appear in Netflix comedy Turn Up Charlie and The Fast and the Furious spin-off Hobbs and Shaw.

As you may know by now, Amazon prepares a Lord of the Rings TV show. While the production of the show is in early stages, there are some actors already expressing their interest. The latest one to do so is Ian McKellen, who previously starred as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movie trilogies.

During an appearance at the Graham Norton Show, McKellen was asked to share his thoughts on the chance for someone else to play Gandalf on the TV show. “What do you mean, another Gandalf?” said the actor, before adding. “I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I’m not too old.”

Although seeing Ian McKellen in the role of Gandalf would be awesome, there isn’t a big chance for that to happen since Amazon will most likely look for a younger cast which doesn’t have ties with previous movies.

Andy Serkis, on the other hand, wouldn’t be so quick to jump on the opportunity. The actor, who portrayed Gollum in the movies, said he thinks a fresh take on the universe is a better thing.

“I don’t know if I’d want to go back into the Lord of the Rings realm,” he said. “I feel like I’ve spent a large chunk of my life doing that. I’ll say good luck and I think fresh eyes are probably a good thing.”

Although there are many unknowns about the Lord of the Rings TV show, we do know that it will be a prequel to The Fellowship of the Ring, with a multi-season order and a potential spin-off series. This will be Amazon’s attempt to parry HBO’s Game of Thrones and create an internationally recognizable series.
