Transparent creator Jill Soloway reflects of the acclaimed show’s series finale.

Friday night at LA Live’s Regal theater was the site of a veritable Pfefferman family reunion which saw TV matriarch Judith Light met up with her on-screen children played by Gaby Hoffman, Amy Landecker and Jay Duplass, as well as guest stars.

Jeffrey Tambor, who was fired following allegations of harassment, was absent.

“It feels like a gigantic celebration, like a hot air balloon going up in the sky,” Soloway said.

“I think because of all the chaos — and all of the ways in which our show had to re-examine who we were — having a musical gave us a new path forward, a new reason to be. This isn’t just like putting a button on the series,” she said. “It’s kind of like transitioning — twirling and flying into a new direction.”

She also revealed that she’s definitely up to brining back the Pfeffermans.

“I would love to do a sequel, a tri-quel, a Pfefferman family cruise for the Jewish high holidays, whatever! I’ll do anything.”

The first teaser trailer for the final season of Transparent reveals — Maura Pfefferman is dead.

Maura was played by Jeffrey Tambor who exited the revolutionary Amazon series following allegations of sexual misconduct. Since then, fans have been wondering how the story would continue, and end, without the titular matriarch.

The clip dropped Wednesday in celebration of Pride Month. It opens with the news that Maura has died. The final episode will follow the rest of the Pfefferman family — Shelly (Judith Light), Sarah (Amy Landecker), Josh (Jay Duplass), and Ali (Gaby Hoffmann) as they try to come to terms with their loss.

The Pfeffermans will be joined by returning fan favorites including Kathryn Hahn, Trace Lysette, Cherry Jones, Tig Notaro, Melora Hardin, and Rob Huebel.

Amazon’s official description promises “a dazzling two-hour movie musical fantasia. When the Pfeffermans face a life-changing loss, they begin a journey hilarious and melancholy, brazen and bold. As they face this new transition, they confront grief and come together to celebrate connection, joy, and transformation.”

The final send-off was directed and written by series creator Jill Soloway, and with original music by her sister and executive producer Faith Soloway.

Transparent isn’t ending, it’s “transitioning in a musical.”

The Transparent finale will be no traditional ending. Amazon Studios’ Jennifer Salke and series creator Jill Soloway talked to reporters during the Television Critics Association winter press tour Wednesday, about the decision to end the show with a musical finale.

“We would never have wanted to take a special, incredible show like that and just end it unceremoniously. It was Jill’s idea to do a musical movie,” Amazon Studios chief Salke told reporters during the session. “We signed off on that idea, trusting her that she would come up with something incredible. We all sat in the front row of a musical run-through of this movie where we were crying. It is really special.”

For Soloway making a documentary musical about her parent coming out was always on the table.

“As a family we were always doing musicals, so that was kind of the first impulse, was to use song — and in many ways, some people have said that Transparent has always been a show that wants to be a musical.”

The musical finale will bring the Pfefferman family’s story “full circle” according to Salke. The creative choice also allowed the creator to overcome Jefferey Tabor’s exit.

“When everything went down last year and we lost Jeffrey Tambor, we went through so much as a family that felt like this very emotional … there are no words,” she said. “There was no way, really, to just go back to a plain old season five.”

There’s still no premiere date for the fifth and final season of Transparent.
