It’s been quite some time since Lil Nas X broke the internet with his debut album Montero, and he’s finally plotting its follow-up. The Grammy-winning rapper said he’ll kick off a new era by dropping a music video that he had written and directed on his own for the first time ever.

Lil Nas X took to social media to tell his fans he’s getting ready to launch a new era. He shared the exciting news by tweeting, “Wrote AND directed my own music video for the first time. Excited for y’all to see. It’s the best one yet!”

The rapper didn’t share any additional hints about his next single, but his tweet was accompanied by church and dove emojis. He also discussed the release of his next album on social media earlier this year, and told fans, “I could easily just release music but I have to build moments around this s—t. I have to go bigger than before.”

Lil Nas X’s debut studio album Montero came out in 2021 and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart before receiving a Grammy nod for album of the year. It also produced two No. 1 singles: “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby” ft. Jack Harlow.

It’s been two years since the release of Lil Nas X’s debut album Montero, and he’s gearing up for its follow-up. The Grammy-winning singer recently discussed his plans for the future with fans on Twitter and revealed his next album will most likely be out this summer.

Lil Nas X has been using Twitter to interact with his fans for quite some time, and he turned to this social media platform to share exciting news about his next LP. After being asked “when is the album coming”, he replied “most likely summer” and shared a few more crucial pieces of information.

Lil Nas X said he’s in the planning phase now, adding that he could easily release new music but he wants to build moments around each song because he has to go “bigger than before.” The singer also added he’s still in the studio making music and that he’ll have a hard time picking songs for the album because there are so many good ones.

Lil Nas X created quite a splash with his first studio album Montero in 2021, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. It produced chart-topping singles “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and “Industry Baby” ft. Jack Harlow and brought him five Grammy nominations.

The MTV Video Music Awards are just a month away, and we finally know who’ll be in the running for this prestigious award. The list of nominees is in and Lil Nas X, Jack Harlow, and Kendrick Lamar are leading the way with seven nominations each.

Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow owe most of their nominations to their collaboration “Industry Baby”, which has been nominated for video and song of the year, best collaboration, direction, art direction, choreography, and visual effects. Bot Lil Nas X and Harlow are also in the running for artist of the year.

Unlike the “Industry Baby” duo, Kendrick Lamar isn’t in the running for any of the night’s main awards, but that didn’t stop him from scoring seven nominations. Most notably, his song “N95” is in the running for best hip-hop, but he also scored multiple nominations with “The Heart Part 5” and Baby Keem collaboration “Family Ties”.

The list of major contenders at this year’s MTV VMAs also includes Doja Cat and Harry Styles with six nods each, and Billie Eilish, Drake, Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, and The Weeknd with five. Lil Nas X has been teasing his dis track “Late to da Party” for quite some time, and he finally shared it with the world. The Grammy-winning rapper joined forces with NBA YoungBoy in a goofy music video for his latest single that addresses his feud with BET Awards.

“Late to da Party” is probably Lil Nas X’s most meta video yet. It opens with him flushing a photoshopped BET Award down the toilet, paying homage to some of his previous videos, and shifting through countless memes and watermarked stock photos.

Lil Nas X started plotting this song after receiving zero nominations at the 2022 BET Awards this year. Some people felt it was silly of him to hold a grudge since he’s a Grammy-winning artist, but Lil Nas X took it seriously because he believes it hints at the bigger problem of homophobia in the black community.

“This is my point exactly, how can I get acknowledged by the most acclaimed award show in the world and then not even just 1 nomination from my own people? Is that not crazy? Am I really tripping,” wrote the rapper on Twitter earlier this year.

BET Awards representatives dismissed his allegations, saying that they “love Lil Nas X” and that they’re using their platforms to “provide visibility and inclusion for all of the many intersections of the Black community.”

From Drake to Adele, some of our favorite artists dropped new albums throughout 2021 and gave us countless amazing songs to listen to. Here are five brand-new albums that we were listening to on repeat in the past twelve months.

Olivia Rodrigo – Sour

Olivia Rodrigo started 2021 with a bang by releasing her breakout hit “Drivers License”. It was just the start of great things to come and the rest of her debut album Sour was just as amazing as this song.

Drake – Certified Lover Boy

Drake is no stranger to breaking records and he took things to a whole new level with Certified Lover Boy. This album produced more top-ten singles than any other LP in history and spent five weeks atop the Billboard 200 chart.

Adele – 30

We spent over five years waiting for Adele’s latest album and it was worth every second. It took it only three days to become the best-selling album of 2021 and its lead single “Easy on Me” became one of the biggest hits of the year.

Lil Nas X – Montero

Some albums don’t have to hit No. 1 to make a mark, and that’s the case with Lil Nas X’s debut. He broke the internet with the lead single “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” and kept the hits coming our way.

Doja Cat – Planet Her

Doja Cat’s Planet Her is another album that never hit No. 1 but still managed to become a viral sensation and give us such amazing songs as “Woman”, “Need to Know”, and “Kiss Me More” ft. SZA.

It’s been a few months since Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow dropped their viral hit “Industry Baby”, and its chart domination was a long time coming. After weeks spent in second place, this smash hit finally reached the coveted no. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Lil Nas X and Jack Harlow both celebrated the song’s success on social media, but this was an especially big triumph for Harlow since “Industry Baby” happens to be his very first no. 1 single.

“My first number one. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t see this coming while I was writing my verse. Thank you for having me Lil Nas X. This song is something I am gonna be proud to be a part of for the rest of my life. As for what’s next…buckle up,” he wrote on social media.

“Industry Baby” was originally released on July 23rd when it debuted at no. 2 spot, but it didn’t manage to reach the top until now. Its rise to the no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart was aided by a recent release of two new versions of the song, including an extended mix and another one with an alternative digital single cover.

Lil Nas X has collaborated with some of the biggest names on the pop, hip-hop, and country scenes—and he’s ready for more. The Grammy-winning rapper recently shared a list of his dream collaborators, and it includes some pretty amazing and bold choices.

The “Old Town Road” singer took to TikTok to share a list of his dream collaborators, by posting a video that included photos of Lady Gaga, Kid Cudi, Ariana Grande, SZA, Willow Smith, Tyler, the Creator, Cardi B, Azealia Banks, and more.

Cardi B already happens to be one of Lil Nas X’s previous collaborators, since they joined forces for “Rodeo” in 2019. The rapper also previously tweeted about wanting to collaborate with Lady Gaga and said he was thinking of asking her to be a part of his debut album Montero, but never finished the song he was writing with her in mind.

Lil Nas X also tweeted about a possible collaboration with Kid Cudi. After being criticized for having no black male guests on his album Montero, the rapper admitted not many of them want to work with him, and Kid Cudi weighed in on the issue by saying he’s interested in joining forces.

Lil Nas X might have missed the no. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart with his debut album Montero, but he has another major milestone to celebrate. 11 songs from this record made it on the Billboard Hot 100, and three of them even managed to break through the top 10.

Following its debut at no. 2, “Industry Baby” featuring Jack Harlow returned to its peak position, and it was only bested by The Kid LAROI and Justin Bieber’s “Stay”. Former no. 1 “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” took the no. 9 position, while Lil Nas X’s latest single “That’s What I Want” debuted at no. 10.

Montero featured numerous A-list collaborations that made it to the Billboard Hot 100 following the album’s release. The list includes “Scoop” featuring Doja Cat, “Dolla Sign Slime” featuring Megan Thee Stallion, “One of Me” featuring Elton John, and “Am I Dreaming” featuring Miley Cyrus, in addition to several solo songs.

Montero was released on September 17th to rave reviews, and debuted at no. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart, behind Drake’s Certified Lover Boy. It’s Lil Nas X’s second record to make it to no. 2 on this chart, following his 2019 EP 7.
