The Berlin International Film Festival is set to return to Germany this winter, and its jury is already shaping up to be amazing. M. Night Shyamalan will serve as the jury president of the upcoming edition of the prestigious festival, set to take place between February 10-20, 2022.

In an official statement announcing his involvement, Shyamalan said he always felt like an independent filmmaker within the system of Hollywood and that’s why he considers the invitation to preside over the Berlinale jury as a great honor.

“Being asked to be a part of Berlinale is deeply meaningful to me. It represents the highest imprimatur for a filmmaker. Being able to support and celebrate the world’s very best talent in storytelling is a gift I happily accepted,” said the Oscar-nominated filmmaker.

Berlinale’s artistic director Carlo Chatrian echoed his statement, and said they’re honored to have Shyamalan accept their invitation, and described him as “a unique figure” and “a filmmaker that has remained faithful to his vision.”

Shyamalan’s most recent credits include psychological thrillers Glass and Old, both of which found a significant box office success on a relatively small budget. He also recently severed as the executive producer of the Apple TV+ series Servant.

M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass is expected to earn a solid $47 million by the end of Sunday, four days after it debuted on theaters Thursday night.

The performance is just slightly below what Universal had forecasted ($50 million).  The film, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Bruce Willis, Sarah Paulson and James McAvoy, debuted on Thursday in 3,200 North American theaters and earned $3.7 million that night.

Glass is the continuation of Shyamalan’s Unbreakable and its sequel Split in 2017. The film’s success is yet to happen. Critics predict that Glass will become the second highest grossing film in the MLK weekend only behind American Sniper that grossed $107.2 million in 2015.  That means the film will surpass Kevin hart and Ice Cube’s Ride Along’s $48 million earnings the comedy film earned in 2014.

Shyamalan directed, wrote and financed film for a total of $20 million. He hired most of his former employees in past sequels for Glass. McAvoy reprised his character from the Split movie while both Willis and Jackson reprised their roles in the original Unbreakable movie.

Poor reviews may have shunned enthusiasm to view the film, which was originally forecasted to debut at $70 million. Fortunately, both the Upside and Aquaman also had unfavorable reviews but are leading box office numbers so far.

The first reviews for Glass are in and unfortunately the name of the talented M Night Shyamalan seems to have become the butt of director jokes.

Glass is the long overdue sequel of the Shyamalan masterpiece that is Unbreakable. In Split, we were introduced to a new character in the Unbreakable universe and we became so excited about the prospect of a crossover that we forgot to consider what making a sequel really meant for the iconic superhero film.

Currently, Glass is rated a dismal 38% on Rotten Tomatoes and although the public might have a different response, the general consensus from the critics is that the movie failed in every possible way.

In a scathing review, Forbes said: “Glass is a shattering disappointment and a monumental artistic misfire from one of my favorite filmmakers. It is, at least, a testament to my belief that Unbreakable needed no sequel. If that majestic superhero origin-as-mid-life-crisis drama was too early to cash in on the zeitgeist (which is, to be fair, part of what made it stand out all of these years), then this continuation is (at best) a decade too late.”

And Hollywood Reporter said: “Though satisfying enough to work at the multiplex, Glass doesn’t erase memories of the ways that even movies before the abjectly awful After Earth and The Last Airbender made us wary of the words ‘A film by M Night Shyamalan.’”

Variety only added to the collection of harsh reviews, saying: “Yet the movie, watchable as it is, is still a disappointment, because it extends and belabors the conceits of “Unbreakable” without the sensation of mystical dark discovery that made that film indelible. “Glass” is a sequel that feels more dutiful than necessary. It turns the earlier film’s ominous pop poetry into overexplicit blockbuster prose.”

You can watch Glass and see for yourself in cinemas January 18.
