The title of the greatest television show of the 21st century went all the way down to the wire.

The BBC decided to rank the 100 best series of the last 21 years by asking 206 experts in 43 countries to share their favourites.

“The result is a list that stands as a true testament to the power, versatility and innovation of the medium over the last two decades,” the British broadcaster stated.

The Wire, which aired five seasons between 2002 and 2008, came in the top spot. Set in Baltimore, the series has been described as a gritty look at how law enforcement filters into other institutions in the city.

“I’m glad the show has a shelf life,” said creator David Simon in response to the honour. “The writers had in their heads the idea, ‘If a society is going to have a law enforcement arm, what’s the job of that institution?’ If you write a show like that, it will have a shelf life for as long as those systems are in play.”

Other fan favorites also made the list, including the U.S. version of The Office at 39 (the UK version came in at 9), Grey’s Anatomy at 47, Black Mirror at 22, The Big Bang Theory at 56, and The Queen’s Gambit at 100.

Following The Wire in the top 5 were Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Fleabag, and Game of Thrones.

Most of the shows have already gathered the creative crew behind them but Hawkeye‘s crew is still unannounced.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter reports that the show has found its showrunner and main writer in acclaimed Mad Men writer Jonathan Igla. Igla, who was also a writer on Sorry for Your Loss, will also serve as one of the show’s executive producers.

Not much is yet known about the upcoming show apart from the fact that Jeremy Renner will reprise his role as the Avenger’s marksman archer Clint Barton. The show will also include Barton’s protégé Kate Bishop, but it is still unknown who will play her part. It is also unclear if Linda Cardelinni will be participating in the show in her role as Clint’s wife Laura Barton as played in the movies.
