]]>Mikkelsen received the honorary Etoile d’Or award at this year’s Marrakech Film Festival, where he’s also promoting his new film The Promised Land. He was a part of the festival’s masterclass program, and some interesting questions came up while he was chatting with the audience.
At one point, Mikkelsen was asked to share his thoughts about frequently playing villains in popular franchises. He blamed “funny accent” for his casting in these roles, saying that Hollywood fell in love with the Danish accent for some reason.
“Then if the Americans see something they like, they have a tendency to try and copy it. I’ve been lucky enough to do different villains in different universes… I never think about it too much. In Denmark, we don’t divide it into bad guys and good guys, we tend to look at more complex characters,” he explained.
Mikkelsen has been a household name in his home country of Denmark for over two decades, but his global rise to prominence started with the role of Le Chiffre in the James Bond film Casino Royale. He went on to play many bad guys in the years to come, in such high-profile projects as Doctor Strange, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and the TV series Hannibal.

]]>Production companies Appian Way, Endeavor Content, and Makeready won the rights for a remake after an intense bidding battle. The new version of Another Round is being developed as a potential star vehicle for Leonardo DiCaprio, who’s supposed to take the role played by Mads Mikkelsen in the original film.
Another Round centered on a group of friends who are trying to test the theory their lives will improve if they maintain a constant level of alcohol in their blood, only to face dire consequences. The news of a potential remake was met with a lot of criticism online, but the director Thomas Vinterberg gave it his blessing.
“It’s an interesting artistic thing to see something grow into different versions. Now it’s in the hands of the finest actor you can get and besides being a brilliant actor, he’s made very intelligent choices throughout his career… I’m full of hope and curiosity about what they’re up to,” Vinterberg told IndieWire.

]]>Grindelwald will not be the first villain in Mikkelsen’s career. The Danish actor’s resume includes an evil sorcerer in Doctor Strange, the banker Le Chiffre in Casino Royalle, and Dr. Hannibal Lecter in Hannibal. He also portrayed Galen Erso in Rough One: A Star Wars Story.
Apparently, Depp was asked to leave after only one day of filming, but got paid for the entire movie. However, he had a five-movie contract, which he of course lost now.
Fantastic Beasts 3 is due to be released in the summer of 2022 after being postponed from its original November 12, 2021 release date. It stars Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law.
