Space Jam 2 has a news director.

Malcolm D. Lee will take over for Terence Nance in the sequel to the 1996 hit that starred Michael Jordan. According to multiple outlets, Nance’s exit from the project was due to the filmmaker and the studio’s different takes on the creative vision for the sequel.

The original film also starred NBA stars Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, and Patrick Ewing and saw Jordan and Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Tunes characters win a basketball match against a group of aliens.

Production had already been underway when the studio announced Tuesday that Lee has boarded the project.

News of the sequel’s new helmer follows news of Don Cheadle’s casting in Space Jam 2.

Lee’s directorial credits include Girls Trip, Night School, and Barbershop: The Final Cut.

Universal has a put pilot commitment from NBC for a family drama set in Harlem helmed by Malcolm D. Lee.

Lee is set to write and produce the new series titled At That Age. This will be his first TV project from his Blackmaled Productions. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series will follow the Cooper family. After suffering a catastrophic event, seven family members face a foundational shift, make life-altering decisions and deal with deep secrets coming to light.

“To have the first project to come out of our deal with UTV be a story that I feel passionate and strongly about, that I’m getting the opportunity to write, is incredibly gratifying,” said Lee. “Just like my first film, At That Age will explore universal themes where everyone can see themselves. The specificity of exploring those dynamics with an African American family show will be emblematic of what audiences who’ve enjoyed my films should expect: heart, humor and intelligence.”

Nikki Reed, who will serve as executive producer alongside Lee added, “I’m excited about exploring the complicated dynamics that are often universally shared by siblings. The relationship between brothers and sisters can be reflected by a titanic clash of opposing emotions, of love and hate of competition and support, of envy and admiration. Malcolm will get a chance to do a deep dive into these delicate and challenging relationships in At That Age.”
