Toronto Film Festival wrapped up this weekend, after presenting some of this year’s Oscar hopefuls to the world, and the audience picked their favorite. Taika Waititi’s latest movie Jojo Rabbit received the most votes and ended up winning the People’s Choice Award.

Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and Bong Joon-ho’s Cannes winner Parasite were first and second runner-ups for this award but failed to win the race. This is quite an impressive feat since the list of this year’s gala presentations also included critically lauded films Hustlers, Joker and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.

Attendees of the Toronto Film Festival are in charge of picking the winner of the People’s Choice Award by leaving their ticket stubs in voting boxes outside the theatre after each screening. Despite the fact that the voice of the people decides the winners, this award is considered as the tipping point for the Oscars race.

Many of the winners of TIFF’s People’s Choice Award went on to score a Best Picture nomination at the Academy Awards and even took the big prize – including last year’s honoree Green Book.
