Paramount has delayed Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7.

Top Gun: Maverick, a sequel to the 1986 film, has been pushed back to May 27, 2022, instead of November 19, 2021. Mission: Impossible 7, a film in the spy series, will debut on September 30, 2022, instead of May 27, 2022.

Each has been delayed several times over the last year and half because of low movie theater attendance levels. The latest delay comes from the country’s surge in COVID-19 cases. This has made it difficult for big-budget films like Top Gun: Maverick and Mission: Impossible 7 to profit theatrically.

Moments after Paramount took Top Gun: Maverick off of the November 19, 2021 date, Sony pushed Ghostbusters: Afterlife from its November 11, 2021 spot to that date.

While this is a huge blow to cinemas, other studios have big movies scheduled this year including Universal’s Dear Evan Hansen, MGM’s No Time to Die, Sony’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Disney and Marvel’s Eternals, 20th Century Studios’ West Side Story, and Warner Bros. The Matrix 4.

The Mission: Impossible franchise is known, among other things, for pushing the limits with its stunts. The star of the franchise, Tom Cruise, amazed the audience again and again with his breathtaking stunts such as hanging out of Burj khalifa during the fourth movie. Now, the seventh installment of the franchise is about to up the ante.

The production of Mission: Impossible 7 is set to resume in September in the UK and move to Poland in April. There, during one of the scenes, the production intends to actually blow up a local bridge that was built in 1909 near the village of  Pilchowice.

The local residents, however, are not happy with the idea. They are trying to push for their government to recognize the bridge as a national monument, thus preventing its destruction. Deputy Culture Minister, Pawel Lewandowski, said that the gained publicity from this stunt is worth the sacrifice. “I would not be fixated on the fact that the Pilchowicki Bridge is a monument,” said the deputy minister. “It stands in ruins and has no value. Not all old things are monuments.”

He also claimed that only part of the bridge will be destroyed and that the production will give financial backing to the rebuilding of the bridge alongside revitalization funds provided by the Polish government.
