People lost it when Disney announced they’re plotting a live-action Moana remake, but one member of the original cast won’t be back for this project. Auli’i Cravalho said she won’t play the title character in the new version of the beloved Disney film that launched her career.

When the Moana remake was originally announced, many assumed Cravalho would return, especially after Dwayne Johnson confirmed he’ll be back as Maui. Cravalho took to Instagram to clear the confusion and said she won’t be reprising the role that brought her to prominence.

“I believe it is absolutely vital that casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell. So, as an executive producer on the film, I cannot wait to help find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit, and emotional strength,” she explained.

The voice of Moana also added that she’s truly honored to pass this baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent to honor the incredible Pacific peoples, cultures, and communities that helped inspire Moana’s story.

Dwayne Johnson announced the remake of the 2016 animated movie back in April from the beaches of Hawaii and said he’s deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen.

Disney gave us one of their most beloved animated movies in recent years with Moana—and there’s more on the way. Dwayne Johnson announced that Disney is plotting a live-action adaptation of this movie and he’s planning to return in the role of Maui.

The Moana live-action remake was announced during Disney’s annual shareholder meeting led by CEO Bob Iger. Dwayne Johnson tuned in via a sweet pre-recorded message from the island of O’ahu, featuring his two young daughters, and announced the next chapter in Moana’s story.

“I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen. This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength,” said Johnson in a statement.

Johnson will executive produce the project, and he’s returning in the role of a legendary shapeshifting demigod Maui. Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated version, will also serve as an executive producer. Jared Bush, who wrote the script of the original movie, will also return for the live-action adaptation, but it’s unclear in what capacity.

Moana premiered in 2016, and it was a commercial and critical hit, grossing $645 million worldwide and earning two Oscar nominations.

In 2016 former WWE wrestler and current A-lister Hollywood actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson revealed to the world another one of his talents. Appearing in Moana as the devious demigod Maui Johnson took the audience by storm with his singing voice, performing one of the movie’s most catchy and popular songs “You’re Welcome”.

The tune has just reached quadruple platinum status and the actor knows exactly who to credit for this achievement. No, he is not talking about the song’s writer Lin Manuel Miranda. According to Johnson the credit belongs to his 2-years-old daughter Tia.

On his Instagram account, Johnson thanked Miranda for writing the song, but said the real reason for the song’s success is his “2 year old boss, Baby Tia”.

In the past, Johnson posted videos of himself singing the song for Tia several times, and every time, the toddler sings along with him completing his sentences and wants to go another time. When asked by Johnson, “is daddy Maui”, she responds with a definite “no”. Till now, according to Johnson, he sang the piece to his daughter more than 900 times—and she still does not believe it is him.
