Disney announced that Mulan, which was set to be released in theaters, is going to debut on Disney + on September 4.

Disney will be releasing the film theatrically in markets where Disney + isn’t available and theaters are open.

“In the U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and a number of countries, we will be offering on Disney+, the epic Mulan on a premiere access beginning September 4, with the price point being $29.99 in the U.S.,” CEO Bob Chapek said during the company’s earnings call.

“We’re pleased to bring Mulan to a consumer base that’s been waiting for it as we’ve had to move our (release) dates several times…We’re looking at Mulan as a one-off as opposed trying to say that there’s a new business windowing model,” he added.

Mulan was initially supposed to be released on March 27 and since then it’s been delayed multiple times. On July 23, Disney took the film off the calendar temporarily.

Warner Bros. has recently removed Christopher Nolan’s Tenet from its release schedule. Now, Disney is following suit with a slew of delays and changes to its own calendar.

The most notable victims of these changes are Niki Caro’s live-action adaptation of Mulan and Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch. Both movies got delayed and there is no new date set for their release.

Another hot franchise to be delayed is the new Avatar sequels who got pushed back for at least a year. Avatar 2 is due to be released on December 16, 2022. The next movies will be released on December 20, 2024, December 18, 2026, and December 22, 2028.

The first movie in the next Star Wars trilogy was also delayed. The Taika Waititi-directed movie is now set to be released on December 22, 2023. The sequels were moved accordingly to December 19, 2025, and December 17, 2027. Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile got pushed back two weeks and The Personal History of David Copperfield was moved from mid-August to the end of the month. The Last Duel, starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, was moved from December to October of 2021.

Disney’s Mulan has finally begun production after years in development, and our favorite film studio found a perfect way to mark the occasion. Disney unveiled the first look of Liu Yifei, poised for battle as the iconic warrior princess.

Yifei’s casting as the titular character in the upcoming live-action adaptation of 1998 animated classic was announced last November. Disney’s casting team went on a year-long search, sorting through nearly 1’000 candidates before picking her. The first look at the upcoming movie features Yifei dressed in a red robe with long black hair tumbling over her shoulders.

Disney described their latest live-action revival as “an epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China.” It joins the ranks of recently released live-action adaptations Alice in Wonderland, Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella and The Jungle Book. Disney is also working on new versions of beloved classics Aladdin, Dumbo and The Lion King.

They’ll all hit the theaters before Mulan, since it’s set for release on March 27, 2020. Filming will take place in New Zealand and China under the direction of Niki Caro, who rose to prominence with Whale Rider.
