Multiple outlets confirm that NBC Universal’s streaming service Peacock has greenlit a Punky Brewster sequel. 

Starring in the 10-episode series order are original stars Soleil Moon Frye as the titular character and Cherie Johnson, Punky’s best friend. 

According to Entertainment Weekly, the sequel will follow Punky as a single mother of three children trying to get her life back on track. She’ll meet a young foster girl named Izzy (Quinn Copeland), who reminds Punky of her younger self. Also starring is Freddie Prinze Jr. as Travis Punky’s ex-husband. 

“I am beyond thrilled and honored to be bringing Punky back!” Frye said in a statement. “I’m grateful to our NBCUniversal Content Studios and Peacock family and to our incredible team of creators, writers, producers, cast, and crew that have put their hearts into this journey every step of the way. It is with great love for the amazing people who were such a pivotal part of creating the Punky magic that I will do my very best to honor their memory as we once again share Punky with the people that love her and a new generation discovering her for the first time. Multiple outlets report that MacFarlane has landed a massive overall deal at NBCUniversal. The deal is for five years and is reportedly worth at least $200 million. Under the deal, MacFarlane, through his production company Fuzzy Door, will develop and produce television projects for NBCUniversal.

“I am extremely honored to be partnering with Dawn Olmstead and the entire UCP team,” MacFarlane said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “My relationship with Universal pre-dates this new chapter, and if my experience producing television with UCP is anything like the experience I’ve had producing films with the company, it will be an exciting and creatively fulfilling one for me and for Fuzzy Door. I’m especially inspired by all of the opportunities that NBCUniversal Content Studios has to offer with George [Cheeks] and Bonnie [Hammer] at the helm. I will remain indebted to my good friend Dana Walden and the team at 20th for their collaborative partnership over the years, and I look forward to our continued work together on Family Guy, American Dad, and The Orville.”

MacFarlane’s overall deal at 20th Century Fox Television expired in June. This is the first deal announced at NBCUniversal after the three NBCUniversal television studios merged under a single and new banner.

Multiple outlets confirm that the new Saved By the Bell series at NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock has cast Josie Totah as its lead. 

Totah who came out as transgender in 2018 will star in the half-hour comedy as “Lexi, a beautiful, sharp-tongued cheerleader and the most popular girl at Bayside High who is both admired and feared by her fellow students.”

The reboot also features original stars Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley reprising their roles of A.C. Slater and Jessie Spano. 

The comedy follows what happens when California Gov. Zack Morris gets into hot water for sending low-income students to the highest-performing schools in the state — including Bayside High.

The new series hails from Tracey Wigfield. It was picked up straight to series back in September.

Another series is getting the reboot treatment with multiple outlets confirming that NBCUniversal’s streaming service working on a new Saved by the Bell series. 

The series will reunite two original stars who will reprise their roles in the comedy —Mario Lopez and Elizabeth Berkley. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the streamer is in talks for other original stars to return. 

According to the logline, the revival will see California governor Zack Morris in hot water for closing too many low-income high schools. When he suggests sending the affected students to the highest-performing schools in the state — including Bayside High — the influx of new students “gives the overprivileged Bayside kids a much-needed and hilarious dose of reality.”

The series hails from Great News creator Tracey Wigfield. Wigfield will also showrun and exec produce alongside original series creator Peter Engel and Franco Bario. Lopez and Berkley will also produce.

NBCU’s newly-named streaming platform, Peacock, will launch April 2020.
