HBO released an official statement announcing the show’s cancelation but added they’re moving forward to working with the brilliant creatives at the production company Team Downey on future projects.

“We are tremendously grateful for the remarkable work of Matthew Rhys and the unrivaled cast and crew of Perry Mason for their reimagining of such a treasured and storied franchise,” HBO said in a statement.

HBO’s head of drama Francesca Orsi released a personal statement, saying she’s very proud of this series and what they managed to deliver in Season 2.

Perry Mason was based on Erle Stanley Gardner’s book of the same name, and it centered on famed defense lawyer Perry Mason, as he tries to take on the most sensational case of his career while dealing with the trauma of the Great War.

Rhys received an Emmy nod for his performance in this series, and he was in pretty good company while filming this project. The supporting cast included Juliet Rylance, Chris Chalk, Shea Whigham, Tatiana Maslany, John Lithgow, Justin Kirk, Diarra Kilpatrick, Eric Lange, and Katherine Waterston.

Perry Mason stars Mathew Rhys (The Americans) as defense lawyer Mason in Los Angeles in 1931. HBO described the series as, “While the rest of the country struggles through the Great Depression, this city is booming! Oil! Olympic Games! Talking Pictures! Evangelical Fervor! And a child kidnapping gone very, very wrong.”

Based on characters that were created by author Erle Stanley Gardner, Perry Mason follows the origins of the fictional legendary criminal defense lawyer. Perry Mason was also a courtroom drama that ran from 1957-1966 starring Raymond Burr. Rhys is set to play a younger version of the character.

“When the case of the decade breaks down his door, Mason’s relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself,” the official logline reads.

In addition to Rhys, Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), E.B. Jonathon, Shea Whigham, Juliet Rylance, Chris Chalk, Stephen Root, Gayle Rankin, Nate Corddry, Veronica Falcon, Jefferson Mays, Lili Taylor, Andrew Howard, Eric Lange, and Robert Patrick also star in the series.

The series was created by Rolin Jones (The Exorcist) and Ron Fitzgerald (Westworld), and directed by Timothy Van Patten (Game of Thrones).

In the trailer, we see Mason and the characters he interacts with while investigating the kidnapping and death of an infant. The coroner tells Mason, it’s “the worst thing you’ve ever seen,” and Mason responds with, “What do you know what I’ve seen?”

The Orphan Black alumna will star opposite Matthew Rhys, who will play the titular chapter in the upcoming project.

Set in 1932 Los Angeles, when the city is booming while the rest of the country recovers from the Great Depression, the series follows the titular fictional criminal defense lawyer, during a time in the character’s life when he is living check-to-check as a low-rent private investigator, haunted by his wartime experiences in France. But when the case of the decade breaks down his door, Mason’s relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and, just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself.

According to Deadline, who was first to report the news, Maslany will play Sister Alice, the leader of the Radiant Assembly of God. Preaching three sermons a day to a hungry congregation and a radio audience that spans the country, she’s an entertainer, politician and God’s conduit to the City of Angels. Sister Alice wields great power when she speaks and plans to use it in ways only she can know.

Maslany’s other credits include the Destroyer, Stronger, Picture Day, The Vow, Violet and Daisy, and Blood Pressure.

Attached to star in the titular role is The Americans alum Matthew Rhys. This marks Rhys’ first TV project since starring on FX’s spy thriller. The series will be directed by Tim Van Patten (Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos) from a script penned by Rolin Jones and Ron Fitzgerald. Van Patten will also serve as executive producer, and Jones and Fitzgerald are set as showrunners.

Here’s the official logline for the feature film turned limited series: “1932, Los Angeles. While the rest of the country recovers from the Great Depression, this city is booming! Oil! Olympic Games!
