It has been announced that Netflix’s series which follows the lives of the monarchy, The Crown, will end after its fifth season. 

“At the outset I had imagined The Crown running for six seasons but now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop,” show creator Peter Morgan said in a statement. “I’m grateful to Netflix and Sony for supporting me in this decision.”

Olivia Colman is currently playing Queen Elizabeth II during the middle period of her life. She will continue to do so for another season before Imelda Staunton takes over. 

“As an actor, it was a joy to see how both Claire Foy and Olivia Colman brought something special and unique to Peter Morgan’s scripts,” said the Maleficent actress. “I am genuinely honored to be joining such an exceptional creative team and to be taking The Crown to its conclusion.”

Season 5 of the show does not yet have a premiere date.

Multiple outlets confirm that The Crown creator, Peter Morgan, has inked a mega-deal with the streaming giant. 

Sources told Deadline that the multi-year overall deal at Netflix that includes both film and television projects is valued well into the eight figures. Yep, that means that the number potentially crosses the $100 million mark.

“The figure is beyond insane,” the outlet adds. 

The Golden Globe and BAFTA-winner Brit joins other prolific producers who’ve inked overall deals with the streamer including Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, Kenya Barris, Jenji Kohan, and the Obamas, among others.
