Kathleen Kennedy, the producer behind the franchise, reportedly wants to make “big, bold” changes including having a woman in the starring role. Waller-Bridge is already part of the upcoming Indiana Jones 5, in which she reportedly plays a sidekick to archaeology professor Indiana Jones.

It remains unclear if Waller-Bridge’s character, described as a female version of Jones, will take the spotlight in Indiana Jones 5 or if the movie will set the stage for her to star in a potential sixth entry in the franchise.

Indiana Jones 5 will serve as the sequel to 2008’s Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The movie has been in development for some time now and saw a number of behind-the-scenes changes. This included creator Steven Spielberg stepping down as a director and taking the producer role while James Mangold took over the directorial duties.

The movie was initially set to hit theaters in 2019, but several setbacks, including Harrison Ford’s injury, forced the studio to move the release date to July 29, 2022. The filming kicked off in June 2021 and is still underway.
