Queen Elizabeth II, who spent the past 70 years ruling over the United Kingdom, passed away at the age of 96. Britain’s longest-reigning royal died peacefully at her summer residence in Scotland on Thursday and the entire world is mourning her death and the end of an era for the UK.

Queen Elizabeth II’s death was confirmed in a statement by her eldest son Charles III, who succeeded her as King. He described her passing as the moment of the greatest sadness for him and all members of the royal family.

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world,” said King Charles.

Several members of the royal family rushed to the Queen’s side after her medical condition has gotten worse. Buckingham Palace announced that Her Majesty was “under medical supervision” at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday, and the news of her death came a few hours later.

Queen Elizabeth II’s passing sent shock waves around the world, with many world leaders and public figures sending condolences to the royal family. Despite many ups and downs that they went through during her 70-year-long reign, Queen Elizabeth II remained a beloved figure in the UK and around the world. Her death set in motion Operation London Bridge, and her state service will be held at Westminster Abbey on September 19, after a national mourning period of 10 days.

There’s nothing quite like tea with the Queen. Or a marmalade sandwich.

Festivities have been taking place throughout the United Kingdom over the last few days as Britain celebrates 70 years since Queen Elizabeth II took to the throne.

The Queen was just 25 when her father, King George VI, passed away, resulting in her becoming the reigning monarch. Seven decades later, she has become the only British royal in history to commemorate a Platinum Jubilee.

Ahead of the star-studded concert on Saturday evening, Her Majesty appeared in a pre-recorded clip with another much-loved icon as the pair sat down to tea in Buckingham Palace.

“Perhaps you would like a marmalade sandwich,” says Paddington Bear before pulling said snack out of his hat. “I always keep one for emergencies.”

“So do I,” responds the 96-year-old Queen. She then reaches into her handbag. “I keep mine in here. For later.”

The Queen did not attend the Party at the Palace, but the royal family was indeed represented. Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their three children were amongst the 20,000 people who watched Adam Lambert and Queen (naturally), Sir Elton John, and Alicia Keys rocking out in front of the Palace.

The event also included performances by the London casts of famous musicals such as Hamilton, The Phantom Of The Opera, The Lion King, Six, and Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat.

We hope everyone remembered to pack a marmalade sandwich or two.

Arise, Sir Sam!

Sam Mendes, the director who is likely to receive an Academy Award nomination for his newest film, 1917, is heading into the new year with a new title.

Mendes has been announced as part of the Queen’s Honours list, meaning he will enter Buckingham Palace as a commoner, but leave as a Knight! The prestigious tribute is for the 54-year-old’s service to drama throughout his 26-year career that has spurned an Oscar Award for directing American Beauty.

Mendes is not the only Hollywood star being honored by Queen Elizabeth II at the beginning of January.

Steve McQueen, who scooped up the Best Director prize at the 2014 Academy Awards for his feature, 12 Years a Slave, is also being recognized for his services to film. Although raised in Australia, English-born Olivia Newton-John is set to become a Dame, not only because of her contribution to the entertainment industry, but also for her services to charity and cancer research. Despite already being made a Knight in 1998, Sir Elton John has been appointed as Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour for services to music and charity.

The Queen conducts her Honours List twice a year — at New Years and for her birthday in June.

Although the monarch is born on April 21st, it is British tradition to celebrate the reigning sovereign’s birthday on a Saturday in June with an event known as the “Trooping the Colour” parade.

Members of the royal family were, of course, in attendance for the Queen’s big day, including little Louis.

This marked the 1-year-old Prince of Cambridge’s first royal engagement and he shared an adorable wave with the crowd as he stood alongside his parents, Prince William and Duchess Catherine, and siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

The Trooping the Colour also marked the first public appearance for Meghan Markle since giving birth to baby Archie four weeks ago.

Seems like a royally lovely day!

At the mature age of 92, Queen Elizabeth II has posted her first picture to Instagram!

Using the Royal Family account (@theroyalfamily, in case you aren’t already following), the Queen shared an image of a letter from from the Royal Archives, which she discovered during a visit to the Science Museum.

The letter, from 1843, was written by the the world’s first computer pioneer, Charles Babbage, to Elizabeth’s great-great-grandfather Prince Albert.

“Today, I had the pleasure of learning about children’s computer coding initiatives and it seems fitting to me that I publish this Instagram post, at the Science Museum which has long championed technology, innovation and inspired the next generation of inventors,” the Queen wrote.

She signed the post “Elizabeth R”, short for Elizabeth Regina which translates to “Queen Elizabeth” in Latin.

The Queen may not be Santa Claus, but she does have a list of names to give honours to.

Each year, the head of the monarchy recognises the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom.

The 2019 list is not short on famous names across various aspects of society, and certainly not when it comes to entertainment.

Amongst the more than 1,100 honourees is director Christopher Nolan whose work includes the Batman Begins trilogy, Inception, and Dunkirk. The filmmaker will be named a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for his services to film.

Receiving a CBE for his services to music is drummer Nick Mason who has been with rockband Pink Floyd since its establishment.

Marking 50 years since the creation of Monty Python will see Michael Palin given a knighthood; while famous model Twiggy is due to become a Dame.

Others being honored by Queen Elizabeth II include Margaret Atwood who penned The Handmaid’s Tale, and actresses Thandie Newton and Sophie Okonedo.

Royal birthday wishes are in order!

Prince Charles has reached a very significant milestone in his life (no, not becoming King…) — turning 70.

The Prince of Wales was surrounded by family and friends as he celebrated his seven decades in a lavish party, hosted by his mum, Queen Elizabeth II.

It is a privilege for any mother to be able to propose a toast to her son on his 70th birthday,” the 92-year-old monarch said at the Buckingham Palace affair. “It means that you have lived long enough to see your child grow up. It is rather like — to use an analogy I am certain will find favor — planting a tree and being able to watch it grow. My mother saw me turn 70, of course. And she was heard to observe that 70 is exactly the age when the number of candles on your cake finally exceeds the amount of breath you have to blow them out. Over his 70 years, Philip and I have seen Charles become a champion of conservation and the arts, a great charitable leader — a dedicated and respected heir to the throne to stand comparison with any in history — and a wonderful father. Most of all, sustained by his wife Camilla, he is his own man, passionate and creative.”

The Duchess of Cornwall accompanied her husband to the event which was also attended by Princes William and Harry, and their respective wives, Kate and Meghan.

Earlier in the day, Clarence House released a new portrait of Charles with his lovely family.

As for the Prince himself?

When asked what it felt like turning 70, he said, “I’m not sure. It’s rather like indigestion. ‘Many Happy returns’ are not quite the same as you get older.”

Happy, happy!
