It turns out that one of rock’s best-known lines was originally not meant to be sung at all. Speaking with Rolling Stone, Rage Against the Machine’s guitarist, Tom Morello, revealed that Killing in the Name, one of the band’s most known songs, was instrumental at first.

“There’s a Rage Against the Machine video from Cal State Northridge—which is our first public performance—where we open the show with an instrumental version of ‘Killing in the Name’”, Morello said, “and Timmy [Commerford, bassist], I think, came up with that really cool [bass riff]. [Drummer Brad Wilk’s] crowd-bouncing beat is there from the very, very beginning. And then Zack [de la Rocha, vocalist] laced it with the historic lyrics.”

Morello explained they even left the lyrics out of the album’s sheet first. “I think it’s two lines, 16 ‘f** yous’, and one ‘motherf**r.’ And we’re like, in the midst of all this grand political poetry, let’s just that one stand for itself,” Morello added.

Morello continued to explain the lyrics: “‘F** you, I won’t do what you tell me’ is a universal sentiment. While it’s a simple lyric, I think it’s one of [Zack de la Rocha’s, singer] most brilliant. And to me, it relates to [19th century U.S. abolitionist] Frederick Douglass,” he explained.

Killing in the Name was released on the band’s debut self-titled album in 1992.

Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello has announced that he will be releasing a new book later this year.

The book will share the story of Morello’s time with Rage Against The Machine. There will be rare photos, handwritten notes, and Morello’s own commentary. It will be titled Whatever It Takes.

Morello said in a statement: “This is a book about a lifelong mission. A mission that more often can be felt rather than articulated. There are clues to the nature of the mission in the guitar riffs, the crazy solos, the lyrics, and in the shared sweat and solidarity of friends and comrades onstage and off.”

Whatever It Takes will be available to purchase in standard or limited edition. The limited-edition copies are limited to 2,000 and will be signed by Morello himself. This version will also include an exclusive 7″ vinyl of the title track “Whatever It Takes.”

You can find out more and view snippets from the book on the Genesis Publications website.

They will then cross the Atlantic to headline the Leeds and Reading festival in the UK on August 28th and August 30th. Raise your hands because this year’s Coachella lineup has been announced!

The famed music festival, known for being the ideal location to spot the who’s who in the celeb world in a fringed waistcoat with an oversized hat, is held annually at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California.

As usual, this year’s festival will be held over two consecutive weekends in April, with around 250,000 people expected to attend.

Before the full lineup was even announced, eager fans scooped up tickets, meaning the first weekend (April 10th to 12th) is already sold out. But worry not, because you still have a chance to buy tickets for Weekend Two (April 17th to 19th) as pre-sales begin on Monday.

So who is set to rock the masses at Coachella 2020?

Rage Against the Machine will entertain crowds on both Fridays as the headline act, while Calvin Harris, Megan Thee Stallion, Lewis Capaldi, and Charli XCX will also feature. Saturday’s headliner is Travis Scott who will be supported by DaBaby, 21 Savage, Thom Yorke, and Flume, while Frank Ocean will close off the weekend as Sunday’s headline act alongside Lana Del Rey, Lil Nas X, and Fatboy Slim.

See you in the spring!
