This project marks the historic first for The Beatles because it’s the first scripted film that officially got a green light from Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison, who granted their full life stories and music rights.

Pippa Harris, who’s producing this project alongside Mendes via Neal Street Productions, described it as “a uniquely thrilling, and epic cinematic experience: four films, told from four different perspectives which tell a single story about the most celebrated band of all time.”

Mendes said they decided to go with Sony Pictures due to their passion for the idea and commitment to propelling these films theatrically in an innovative and exciting way. We’re yet to learn what exactly this means, but all four films are eyeing a 2027 release window.

The Beatles made music together between 1960 and 1970, but that was just enough time to change the face of music forever. Their legacy lives on over five decades later and they’re remembered as one of the most influential rock groups of all time.

Amy Gravitt, EVP of HBO Programming and Head of HBO & Max Comedy, confirmed they picked up this series, which hails from Iannucci, Mendes, and writer Jon Brown.

“With a deft touch only he can bring, Sam has brilliantly captured the romance and the reality of filmmaking today. Jon is superb at sending up worlds we think we already know. Together, with Armando, they have delivered a truly hilarious comedy ensemble,” said Gravitti in a statement.

The Franchise will offer a satirical look at the secret chaos inside the world of superhero movie-making, by focusing on a crew of a disliked franchise movie, trying to salvage this project and find their place in an unruly cinematic universe.

In addition to Patel and Cash, The Franchise will also star Jessica Hynes, Billy Magnussen, Lolly Adefope, Darren Goldstein, Isaac Powell, Richard E. Grant, and Daniel Brühl. The pilot was completed before the SAG-AFTRA strike kicked off, and production isn’t expected to resume before the strikes are over.

Sam Mendes, the director who is likely to receive an Academy Award nomination for his newest film, 1917, is heading into the new year with a new title. 

Mendes has been announced as part of the Queen’s Honours list, meaning he will enter Buckingham Palace as a commoner, but leave as a Knight! The prestigious tribute is for the 54-year-old’s service to drama throughout his 26-year career that has spurned an Oscar Award for directing American Beauty. 

Mendes is not the only Hollywood star being honored by Queen Elizabeth II at the beginning of January. 

Steve McQueen, who scooped up the Best Director prize at the 2014 Academy Awards for his feature, 12 Years a Slave, is also being recognized for his services to film. Although raised in Australia, English-born Olivia Newton-John is set to become a Dame, not only because of her contribution to the entertainment industry, but also for her services to charity and cancer research. Despite already being made a Knight in 1998, Sir Elton John has been appointed as Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour for services to music and charity. 

The Queen conducts her Honours List twice a year — at New Years and for her birthday in June.

1917 director Sam Mendes was joined by Roger Deakins, co-writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns, producer Pippa Harris and co-stars George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman on stage at the film’s preview panel at New York Comic Con on Thursday.

The movie’s set in two hours of one day in the spring of 1917, after the Germans —retreated to the Hindenburg line. It follows two young British soldiers, played by MacKay and Chapmen, who are tasked with delivering a message that will save the lives of countless men.

“It’s across this landscape that the two young men are sent to preserve the lives of 1,600 men who are to be sent to attack the Hindenberg line,” Mendes e explained. “The movie takes place in just two hours and in one unbroken shot.”

“It was so exhilarating and exciting when it worked that it kept you going for days at a time,” said Mendes, who also added that before cameras started rolling, the actors underwent intense preparation.

“We rehearsed this movie more than I’ve ever rehearsed any movie,” Mendes said. “You can’t jump through space and time. You have to measure the set to match the dialogue, and you have measure the distances.”

1917 hits theaters this December.
