]]> It’s been over three decades since Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of The Color Purple hit the theaters, and he’s getting ready to bring it back. The best part? It’s going to be a musical and… Oprah is also on board!

The Color Purple tells the tale of an African-American woman named Celie who’s struggling with poverty, domestic violence, and racism in the early 20th century. The original movie from 1985 was based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, and it scored 11 Oscar nominations back in the day.

Oprah Winfrey, who made her movie debut with the role of Sofia Johnson, received one of them. This time around, she’ll serve as a producer, alongside Quincy Jones and Scott Sanders. They were also in charge of producing the Tony Award-winning Broadway version of The Color Purple, which will serve as the main inspiration for the upcoming musical.

“We’re really excited to create a film that translates the heart and emotion we found in telling this generational story on stage. This is an incredibly powerful drama that needs to be shared,” explained Sanders.

Steven Spielberg, who directed the 1985 version, will also serve as one of the producers, but the cast and release date are yet to be announced.
