Eight years after the last Sherlock Holmes film was released — Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows —the threequel seems finally set to get underway.

Guy Ritchie directed the first two films in the franchise starring Robert Downey Jr. in the titular role.

The Aladdin director will not be helming the third film but instead passing the directing baton to Dexter Fletcher.

Fletcher has already had a big hit this year with the Elton John biopic, Rocketman, and took over directing duties on last year’s Freddie Mercury film Bohemian Rhapsody after Bryan Singer was dismissed during filming.

Downey Jr. is expected to return as the English detective alongside Jude Law as Dr. Watson.

Warner Bros. had originally planned to release the third film on Christmas Day 2020, but finding a director has delayed the project until Christmas Day 2021.

According to Law, Sherlock Holmes 3 will focus on the fact that Holmes and Watson having seen each other in a long time — mimicking the almost decade-long wait fans will have had to endure.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that fans will have to wait another year for the third installment of the hugely successful franchise. 

Originally set to hit theaters Christmas Day 2020, the threequel that has been pushed back a whole year now has a December 21, 2021 release date. According to the Studio, the now vacant slot is going to an untitled WB event film. 

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law are set to reprise their roles as the titular detective and his sidekick, Dr. Watson, respectively. 

Chris Brancato wrote the script. Susan Downey, Joel Silver, and Lionel Wigram are producing. No director has been attached to the project.

Sherlock Holmes 3 follows 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. The franchise debuted with Sherlock Holmes in 2009. The two films hauled a combined whopping $1 billion at the global box office.
