The show saw undiscovered dancers competing under the mentorship of dance captains Cheryl Tweedy, Oti Mabuse, Matthew Morrison, and Todrick Hall by performing a routine in the hopes of securing enough votes.

Per Variety, the second season saw a major drop in ratings, drawing a reported 2.8 million viewers for its final month. It also faced serious competition from the hit show The Masked Singer.

A BBC spokeswoman said: “Whilst there are no plans for a further series of The Greatest Dancer, we are proud of the show and would like to thank everyone involved in bringing so many memorable moments to BBC One.”

News of the cancelation follows news that the format is being remade in China as The Magnificent Dancer.

The British newspaper The Sun was first to report that the popular television competition show has been put to rest by its creator Simon Cowell after a sixteen-year run. 

“Simon is planning to rest The X Factor this year. He and the producers want to take a breath to really think through the show and how to reinvigorate it for the future. And they don’t believe they can do that if they go straight into another cycle of the show this year.”

“Although The X Factor is contracted for one more series, ITV totally understands the rationale behind the idea of resting it this year and want to give Simon and the team the time to do what they feel is right,” another insider said. 

A spokesman for the show said: “Plans for this autumn are still being finalized and will be announced in due course. We are currently filming Britain’s Got Talent 2020.”

The fourteenth season of the hugely successful talent competition will add Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough to the judge’s table. Taking over hosting of NBC’s flagship summer series is Terry Crews.

“One of the many secrets to the success and longevity of America’s Got Talent is its fearless drive to reinvent itself,” Meredith Ahr, president, alternative and reality group at NBC Entertainment, said Monday in a statement. “The next evolution of the format brings in fresh expert eyes to join Simon and Howie on the panel. Gabrielle and Julianne are two of the most aspirational women in the business, on top of being electric entertainers with talent across disciplines. I am excited to see how their knowledge, compassion and sheer joy enhance the experience for acts and viewers alike. As their partner in crime, host Terry Crews will continue to light up the stage with his quick wit and unending charm.”

Union and Hough are taking over judging duties from Heidi Klum and Mel B. They will join executive producer Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel. 

This is the first change to the judges in three years. Tyra Banks served as host for two seasons.

On Wednesday, the Londoner was honored on the Hollywood Walk of Fame with his very own star.

The tribute was the 2,642nd star on the famous walkway.

The 58-year-old, who has been responsible for acts such as One Direction, Westlife, Camila Cabello, and Fifth Harmony, appeared as a judge on American Idol for 9 years, created both X Factor and America’s Got Talent.

At the start of his speech, Simon joked, “Why did this take so long?” before saying, “If anyone says fame is a bad thing, I don’t know what you’re talking about. It’s the best thing in the world.”

The initial winner of American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, also spoke at the ceremony.

“He’s the best friend you can ever have,” she said from the podium, “He’s honest and supportive. Never got the mean [Simon]… I’m still waiting.”

Amongst those in attendance were One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson, Idol alums Katharine McPhee and Adam Lambert, Leona Lewis, Grace Vanderwaal, and the judges from America’s Got Talent, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, and Mel B.
