The former One Tree Hill and Chicago PD star will play the title character in the medical drama pilot, which marks Bush’s return to the network. 

The medical drama centers on Sam (Bush) a gifted heart surgeon, and her relationship with her domineering father, who happens to work in the same hospital.

Second in command to him and always in his shadow, Sam rises to the occasion when he falls into a coma and she takes charge of the department as chief of surgery. Sam comes into her own professionally and personally, however, her world is upturned again after Griff awakens and wants to practice again, even if it means being supervised by his daughter.

Bush’s other television credits include Love, Victor and This Is Us. Her movie credits include John Tucker Must Die, Incredibles 2 and Acts of Violence.

Entertainment Weekly confirms that Sophia Bush and Pamela Adlon will guest star in upcoming episodes of NBC’s acclaimed drama. 

The casting was announced by creator Dan Fogelman on Saturday.

Little is known of the characters the duo is set to play, however, Fogelman confirmed that Adlon’s character is part of an upcoming storyline for Randall (Sterling K. Brown). 

“Sterling has an unbelievable arc in the back half of the season and she plays an important role in the story,” he said.

This Is Us returns January 14, with John Legend starring in a guest role in the premiere.

The conspiracy thriller drama starring the Chicago PD alumna was not picked up by CBS.

According to Variety, the drama pilot generated quite the buzz and “tested through the roof” according to the network, however, eventually CBS decided that it wasn’t a good fit. 

Surveillance hailed from Matt Reeves, David C. White, Patricia Riggen and 20th Century Fox TV, which co-produced with CBS TV Studios. The pilot was penned by White and directed by Riggen. It was described as “a complex and timely spy thriller centered around the head of communications for the NSA (Bush), a charming operative who finds her loyalties torn between protecting the government’s secrets and her own.”

CBS has picked up eight pilots to series for its 2019-2020 season: Evil, All Rise, FBI: Most Wanted, Tommy, Bob Hearts Abishola, Broke, Carol’s Second Act and The Unicorn.
