Like many music festivals around the world, Coachella and Stagecoach didn’t take place last year, and we’ll have to wait a little bit longer to attend them. The 2021 edition of both festivals have been canceled due to concerns relating to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Coachella representatives decided to put the festival on hold after Riverside County health officials issued an order canceling the highly-anticipated music event. “This order is intended to reduce the likelihood of exposure to COVID-19. If COVID-19 were detected at these festivals, the scope and number of attendees and the nature of the venue would make it infeasible, if not impossible, to track those who may be placed at risk,” reads the order.

This year’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was supposed to take place during two weekends this spring, on April 9-11 and 16-18. This is the third time that Coachella has been canceled since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, and the official statement by the festival organizers says they “look forward to when the events may return.”

Stagecoach was scheduled for the following weekend.

“I am concerned as indications grow that COVID-19 could worsen in the fall,” said Riverside Country public health officer Dr. Cameron Kaiser said. “In addition, events like Coachella and Stagecoach would fall under [California] Governor Newsom’s Stage 4, which he has previously stated would require treatments or a vaccine to enter. Given the projected circumstances and potential, I would not be comfortable moving forward.”

Sources told Variety that Coachella promoter Goldenvoice is still considering holding the event in April or October 2021, with a smaller audience, is possible.

While many things across the country and in the world are starting to reopen, major sporting events and concerts will most likely be the last public gatherings to return.
