]]>The Color Purple was projected to gross around $8–10 million on its first day, but it exceeded everyone’s wildest expectations. With $18.2 million grossed domestically, this film easily soared to the top of the Christmas box office and set several major records along the way.
This marks the largest Christmas Day opening for a movie since Sherlock Holmes, which brought in $24.6 million in 2009. It also scored the highest-grossing post-pandemic domestic opening day for a musical, surpassing Wonka, which made $14.4 million on its first day in North American theatres.
The Color Purple is the latest take on Alice Walker’s iconic novel, and it draws inspiration from the hit Broadway musical of the same name. It chronicles the journey of Celie Harris-Johnson, an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s.
Fantasia Barrino plays Celie, while the film’s star-studded supporting cast includes Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Ciara, Jon Batiste, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

The list of nominees in this category also includes Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction, Ava DuVernay’s Origin, George C. Wolfe’s Rustin, and the animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The Color Purple owes most of its nominations to its amazing cast, with Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, and Phylicia Pearl Mpasi all scoring nods for their respective performances in this musical.
The Color Purple cast also scored a joint nomination for the best ensemble, where the list of contenders also includes American Fiction, The Blackening, Rustin, and They Cloned Tyrone.
Rustin will be the ceremony’s second most-nominated film with ten nods, while its star Colman Domingo will be honored with the inaugural Chadwick Boseman Vanguard Award.

]]>According to its official synopsis, The Color Purple is a “bold new take on the beloved classic” and it invites you to experience the extraordinary sisterhood of three women who share one unbreakable bond.
The Color Purple is based on Alice Walker’s seminal novel of the same name, which inspired the hit musical. It originally ran on Broadway between 2005 to 2008 and received eleven Tony Award nominations before inspiring another acclaimed revival in 2015.
American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino briefly played the role of Celie in the original Broadway production, and she’s now set to reprise it in the film. The cast will also include Taraji P. Henson, Halle Bailey, Elizabeth Marvel, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Danielle Brooks, H.E.R, Coleman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, Louis Gossett Jr., and David Alan Grier, among others.
The Color Purple will be released by Warner Bros. Pictures on December 25. It was directed for the big screen by Blitz Bazawule, while Marcus Gardley, Alice Walker, and Marsha Norman penned the screenplay. Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, and Quincy Jones are coming on board as executive producers.

]]>The Oscar and four-time Grammy winner will be playing Squeak, who goes from a waitress to an aspiring singer and was previously played by Rae Dawn Chong in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 movie.
“There is so much I want to do. People don’t really get to see my comedic and fun side, except for when I’m impersonating my aunt,” she said, with a laugh. “But I definitely want to do a lot more voice-overs, and comedy, but also some serious roles,” the 23-year-old singer previously expressed her desire to get into acting with Variety.
She joins Corey Hawkins (In The Heights, The Tragedy of Macbeth) in the movie which is being directed by Bazawule. The director is best known for his work on Beyoncé’s “Black is King”.
Oprah Winfrey, who made her acting debut in Spielberg’s The Color Purple, will be producing with Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones. Executive producing are Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Carla Gardini, and Mara Jacobs.
The Color Purple is set to be released on December 20, 2023.

]]>The Color Purple tells the tale of an African-American woman named Celie who’s struggling with poverty, domestic violence, and racism in the early 20th century. The original movie from 1985 was based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, and it scored 11 Oscar nominations back in the day.
Oprah Winfrey, who made her movie debut with the role of Sofia Johnson, received one of them. This time around, she’ll serve as a producer, alongside Quincy Jones and Scott Sanders. They were also in charge of producing the Tony Award-winning Broadway version of The Color Purple, which will serve as the main inspiration for the upcoming musical.
“We’re really excited to create a film that translates the heart and emotion we found in telling this generational story on stage. This is an incredibly powerful drama that needs to be shared,” explained Sanders.
Steven Spielberg, who directed the 1985 version, will also serve as one of the producers, but the cast and release date are yet to be announced.
