According to Deadline, Tony Award-winner, Anna D. Shapiro was announced Wednesday by producers Kevin McCollum, Fox Stage Productions and Rocket Entertainment as director. According to the producers, the production plan and casting will be announced at a later date.

The musical is based on Lauren Weisberger’s best-selling 2003 novel and the 2006 film starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, about an aspiring writer who works for a magazine editor from hell. 

The musical will feature music by John, lyrics by Shaina Taub, and book by Paul Rudnick.

“I am truly honored to be a part of this incredible project,” Shapiro said in a statement. “Working with Shaina, Paul, and Sir Elton has already proven to be one of the great thrills of my career, and I look forward to bringing Lauren’s beloved world to the stage.”

So it’s no surprise that Emily Blunt had the reaction she did when Miss Meryl praised her.

The A Quiet Place actress worked with Meryl on The Devil Wears Prada in 2006. The 68-year-old was notorious for staying in her trailer and not engaging with fellow cast members on set to maintain the aloof nature of vicious Runway editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly.

But that all changed once filming had wrapped.

“There was this crazy moment when I wrapped and I remember seeing her across the parking lot,” Emily told Sunday Today. “She burst out of her trailer — the wig was off. She was just Meryl. She was in a puffy jacket. She was like, ‘You were so great’ and I was just like [crying] and I just started to weep. It was sad. “I just was crying the whole way home. I didn’t realize how much her sort of stamp of approval would mean.”

It’s nice to know that Meryl made Emily cry for good reasons too!

Talking recently with Jess Cagle on People TV, Blunt recalled filming the movie and how much she enjoyed it.

“We all just wept with laughter,” the 35-year-old actress told Jess Cagle. “I loved working with sweet Annie Hathaway and it was my first experience working Meryl [Streep] and Stanley Tucci who is now my brother-in-law.”

The Devil Wears Prada revolved around college graduate Andy (Hathaway) who lands a job as an assistant for powerful fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly (Streep). Emily Blunt played Priestly’s co-assistant Emily and was praised for “stealing nearly every scene she’s in,” while receiving a Golden Globes Award nomination in Best Supporting Actress category.

Although the role in the movie brought her first major breakthrough, Blunt doesn’t think The Devil Wears Prada sequel is a good idea.

“If everyone did it I would be up for it,” she said. “I almost hope it doesn’t [happen] because I think sometimes when you sequel everything kind of dilutes how special the original is.”

After The Devil Wears Prada, Emily Blunt went on to build a successful Hollywood career, appearing in movies like The Young Victoria, Looper, Edge of Tomorrow, and The Girl on the Train. After taking a break from feature films in 2017, Blunt will appear alongside her husband John Krasinski in the horror A Quiet Place. She will also portray Mary Poppins in the 2018’s Mary Poppins Returns.
