The Venice International Film Festival is coming back to Italy in September, and it will be quite a spectacle. The lineup for this year’s event has recently been unveiled, and it will include such movies as Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel.

These two projects will be included in the “out of competition” selection, together with several other highly-anticipated movies, such as Edgar Wright’s Last Night In Soho and David Gordon Green’s Halloween Kills.

The list of movies competing for a Golden Lion will be even more crowded, and it includes new projects from the world’s leading art-house directors. Spencer by Pablo Larrain, The Power of the Dog by Jane Campion, Madres Paralelas by Pedro Almodovar, and The Hand of God by Paolo Sorrentino are only some of the movies in the competition for the festival’s biggest prize.

The 78th Venice International Film Festival will take place from September 1-11. South Korean director Bong Joon-ho has been appointed as the president of the jury, and he’ll be joined by the director Chloé Zhao and actresses Cynthia Erivo and Sarah Gadon, among others.

Oscar-nominated director Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel has a star-studded cast. The film stars Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck.

The film is based on the book by Eric Jager titled The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France which chronicled one of France’s last legally sanctioned duels. It’s set in 1386 and sees King Charles VI (Affleck) declare that knight Jean de Carrouges (Damon) settle his debt with squire Jacques LeGris (Driver) after the knight’s wife (Comer) claims sexual assault. The two will duel to death and the one who survives will be the winner, but if Carrouges loses, his wife will be burned at the stake as it’s a sign of her making a false accusation.

The film was written by Nicole Holofcener, Affleck, and Damon and it’s based on an actual event. It’s produced by Scott, Kevin J. Walsh, Jennifer Fox, Holofcener, Damon, and Affleck. Kevin Halloran, Drew Vinton, and Madison Ainley serve as executive producers.

The Last Duel hits theaters on October 15. Check out the trailer below.

Adam Driver is in negotiations to star in Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel

Should he join the project he is set to star opposite Matt Damon and alongside Killing Eve actress Jodie Comer.

According to Variety, the period drama is an epic tale of betrayal and justice, told from three distinct points of view set in 14th century France — two knights (Damon and Driver) whose bond is tested and a young woman (Comer) forced to navigate the brutal and oppressive culture of the era in order to survive.

Penning the screenplay is Nicole Holofcener along with Damon and Ben Affleck.
